CENTRAL OTAGO.

CROMWELL NOTES.

(From Oub Own Coekespon >k Nr.) CROMWELL, November 14. THE WEATHER. The weather continues quite unseasonable in the district. The first week of the month gave promise of summer conditions, but the change was brief. Last Tuesday there was a fairly steady rainfall, but it was followed by a cold storm, with even colder conditions late in the week. The season, therefore, is backward, and tender garden and field crops are making little progress. “SUMMER TIME APPRECIATION." A well-attended public meeting, at which sporting people predominated, was held on Thursday evening to consi !cr the proposed universal recognition of Mr T. K. Sidoy’s Summer Time Act. Although the Cromwell meeting was convened in terms of the circular letter concerning the “ summer time appreciation,” it departed e-tirely from its proposals. A discussion took place in which the claims of a playing area or park for children won very general support. The outcome was that it was decided to take up a collec tion and devote the funds to the purpose mentioned. The maximum subscription was fixed at 2a 6d. As the proposed provision will create a much-necdcd appointment in the town, a liberal response is assured. The area will bear a title worthy of the object it represents. ROLICE COURT. The monthly sitting of the Police Court was held last Wednesday, but no cases of any importance were set down for hearing. The number of mining applications in the Wardens’ Court was the lowest for some time. CRICKET. A team of cricketers, representative of the Upper Clutha clubs, made a visit to Invercargill last week for a series of matches. Annually, and at times twice in a season, an Invercargill team tours the Upper Clutha, Mr Jack Doig usually being in charge. It was in appreciation of the frequent visits, and the benefit that results to country cricket therefrom, that last week the trip was made. In passing, it might be stated that comparisons have frequently been drawn between _ the shown by Invercargill clubs’ as evidenced in their tours, and the very rare "isits from Dunedin teams. During the tour under notice the games played were: —Upper Clutha 78, Invercargill Wanderers 175 for six wickets;; Upper Clutha 111, Bluff and Union combined 77 for three wickets; Gore 38, Upper Clutha 48. A fourth match was abandoned owing to rain. The teams played on the tour have definitely announced their intention of visiting Upper Clutha next Easter.
