STUDENTS OF LONG AGO.
THE AGE OF TOP HATS, p rn ple who live in university towns would be very much surprised if the students of a bygone age were _ suddenly to appear among them again. c>ir Gregory Foster, Provost of London University College, which has just completed its centenary, recalled the other day the time when the students wore top hats, peg-top trousers with a broad black stripe, and side whiskers. Popular prejudice was thwarted when women first entered the college, although these shameless “ ultra-modern ” creatures were all over 30 years of age. They wanted to learn about physics and chemistry. In the ’.seventies four highly favoured ami insistent women were allowed to attend Professor Kay Lankestor s zoology course, but they were carefully smuggled into a gallery and hidden behind a curtain.
