RUGBY FOOTBALL.

OTAGO UNION. The weekly meeting of the Otago Rugby Union was held last night. Mr V. G. Cavanagh presided. The Flag Committee reported that Third, Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Grade matches would be played next Saturday. The committee would report at the next meeting whether any of the competitions would be continued after Saturday. Mr R. Proctor was appointed manager of the junior representative team to play at Christchurch on September 17. The Kaikorai Club was granted permission to send its first fifteen to Milton on Saturday next to play the Toko Club Mr A. M'Donald actir as manager. The application of the Port Chalmers Club to send its Second Grade team to Palmerston on Saturday next was granted. The Secretary reported that the total receipts for Charity Saturday were £260. The matter of allocating the proceeds was referred to the Finance Committee. The Secretary of the Training College Club wrote stating that the Third Grade team would have to default on the next two Saturdays. The Secretary of the o,tago Rowing Association wrote stating that the association had sent a telegram to the Prime Minister urging that the Daylight Paving Bill be brought up at this session.—The Prime Minister replied to the union’ ’ommunication regarding the TTI, -Mting that the matter would receive serious consideration. > JUNIOR TRIAL. SCHOOLS’ TOURNAMENT. (Pee United Press Association.) MASTERTON, August 29. The provincial primary schools’ tournament was continued to-day. Wellington beat Wanganui by 11 points to 3, and Wairarapa beat Manawatu by 17 points to 3. The tourney will be concluded on Wednesday, when Wairarapa will meet Wellington and Manawatu will play Wanganui. The following is a summary of the games: —Wairarapa two wins, Manawatu and Wellington one win and one loss each, and Wanganui two losses. OTAGO TOURING TEAM. TWO CHANGES NECESSARY. M’Clymout and Roy Callander (who recently had a slight operation performed on liis ankle) will be unable to travel north with the Otago team. Their places will be taken by Ron Callander and Wilson (Kaikorai). The touring team will meet at Carisbrook at 7.30 to-night and at 5 p.m. tomorrow. OTAGO v. NORTH OTAGO. The following team has been selected to represent Otago in the match against North Otago, at Carisbrook on Saturday, September 10: Stevenson, M'Clymont, Giles, Bathgate, Buchanan, Sligo, Prebble, More, Garside, Murphy, Dunne, *M‘Ewen (Zingari), M’Ewen (Alhambra), Christie, and Lewis. Emergencies: Lucy, Gorkin, Churchill, and Fountain. The team will meet at Carisbrook at 7.50 p.m. on Thursday. INTER-COLLEGIATE TOURNAMENT. WANGANUI VICTORIOUS. (Pee United Press Association.) WANGANUI, August 29, Wanganui won the collegiate premiership to-day by defeating Christ’s College by 23 points to 5. Wellington beaii Nelson by 21 points to 8. WANGANUI v. CHRIST’S COLLEGE. Christ’s College attacked first, but the local players retaliated. Burke gathered in smartly and transferred to Ellingham, who ran 25 yards to score a great try. Poraai’e failed with the kick. School 3, College nil. The excitement was intense as the game resumed. In the line outs Ollivier was the dominating figure, closely "upported by Shand, and in the set scrums OrbCll and Batchelor were hooking splendidly, and College were gaining th© greater share of the ball. From tight play Armstrong speculated past Lumsden, and more tight plav followed on the visitors ’line. Bethel', picking up, swerved through the defence to score. Poraare added the extra points. School 8, College nil. Half time came immediately after. In the second spell the Christ’s College forwards did not show out as impressively as in the earlier part, and Wanganui showed great dash. Scores were mad© for Wanganui by Caddum, Bethell, ham, and Appleby, ■ Pomare converting two and Johnstone one. The game ended with Wanganui leading bv 23 points to 5. WELLINGTON v. NELSON. Recalling the play against Christ’s College on Saturday, it was expected that Nelson "would prove a solid nroposition for Wellington in the game for the “ wooden spoon ” honours, but the latter played a fast game, the forwards showing to great advantage in the tight play and spoiling tactics, with the result that Nelson went under to the tune of 21 points to 8. The Nelson forwards opened well, supported by the backs, and the Blues had Wellington on defence for a great deal of the time. The scores at the end of the first spell, 8 all, correctly represented the merits of the two teams. Honours in the second spell went to Wellington, the Black forwards infusing great dash, and being mainly responsible for adding 13 more points. Nelson gave an exhibition of game defence, hut the better team won. Wellington’s score was made up as follows; —A penalty bv Cathcart, a try by Poulton, converted by Cathcart, two tries bv Te Moana, who converted, one other being improved bv Cathcart, and a try by Cathcart. For Nelson, Newman scored a try, which he converted, and he also kicked a penalty.

HIGH SCHOOLS’ TOURNAMENT. [Per United Press Association.) TIMARU. August 29. The secondary schools’ football tournament was opened here to-day in beautifully fine weather and before a large attendance. Christchurch completely outclassed Southland in every department of the game, and won by 43 points to nil. In the Timani-Otago match honours were fairly even in the first spell, but in the latter part of the second spell the Timaru forwards showed marked superiority, and their backs co-operating effectively, the match ended : Timaru 22 points, Otago 9 points.
