FIRES.
OUTBREAK IN HOSPITAL. FLAMES QUICKLY SUBDUED. United Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 29. The Bay of Islands Hospital at Kawakawa narrowly escaped destruction by fire. The members of the staff were having tea when they heard a crackling noise at the partition between the dining room and the kitchen. An examination showed the building to be on fire. Townspeople were immediately advised by telephone, and help arrived promptly. Meantime Dr Frengfey had got a lead of water on the outbreak, but the pressure was not good. Another lead was taken from a plug in front of the building, and with a better pressure the fire was soon extinguished. , . ~ The staff and townspeople quickly removed the 25 patients into the open and back into the building again when the fire was extinguished. The prompt action of Dr Frengley and the helpers saved the building. The damage is estimated at £SO. The building was insured m the State office. COUNTRY RESIDENCE DESTROYED. (Pbk United Press Association.) GISBORNE, August 29. Essex House, a 20-rooraed building at Hexton, the country residence of Mr Percival Barker, and until recently used as a boy’s school, was destroyed bv fire last evening. It was insured for £2500 in the State office. No one was living on the premises at the time, and the origin of the fire ,is a mystery.
