Monday, August 29. (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. Albert Reeves Arthur, who did not appear, was fined 20e, in default 24 hours’ imprisonment, for drunkenness. On a further charge of creating mischief by breaking a window of the Railway Boarding House, Castle street, Arthur was fined 20s, and ordered to make good the amount of the damage (10s), in default 48 hours’ imprisonment. OBSCENE LANGUAGE. Thomas Henry Hickey was charged with using obscene language on August 27 to the owner of a fish shop in Cargill road. —Defendant pleaded guilty, and said he had been to a smoke concert. — Senior Sergeant Quartermain said that defendant was under the influence of liquor, though not drunk.—His Worship ordered defendant to take out a prohibition order against himself, and pay the amount of the cab fare, ss. He was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. CARELESS MOTORISTS. For being in charge of an unlighted motor car Thomas MTntyre Cramb was fined 5s and costs (10s). A fine of 5s and costa (10s) was imposed on Robert Wishart Rose, who was similarly charged in respect of a motor cycle. For carrying a pillion passenger on his motor cycle, Algier Sidney Chirnside was fined 5s and costs (10s). , Chirnside’s passenger, Albert Peters, was fined a like amount. Similarly charged, Alexander M’Donald and George Murphy were each fined 5s and costs (10s). For failing to stop in the rear of a stationary tramcar, Henry James Perkins was fined 20s and costs (10s). A CHIMNEY FIRE. A conviction was entered against Charles Gardner for allowing the chimney of his residence to catch fire. MAINTENANCE. Charged with disobedience of a maintenance order on which he was in arrears to the extent of £l3 13s, John M’Kay was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended conditional on his paying f 1 Is, weekly off the current order, and 2s 6d per week off the arrears until they are discharged. William Clark was charged with disobedience of a maintenance order, the solicitor’s fee (£2 2s) still being in arrears.—Defendant was sentenced to 48 hours’ imprisonment, to be released on payment of the full amount. POSTMAN’S DERELICTION. Leslie Walter Benfell, for whom Mr C. B. Barrowclough appeared, was charged with having during the course of his duties as a postal officer secreted in the course of conveyance printed papers sent by post without covers.—Leslie Falconer Smith, an inquiry clerk in the employ of the Post and Telegraph Department, Dunedin, said accused was a postman in the Postal Department until July 20 last, on which date he was discharged. On the correspondence sheet (produced) accused had signed as having delivered certain circulars mentioned on the sheet,* and entrusted to him on June 22, 24, and 25. He had since admitted, however, that he failed to deliver the circulars on June 24. On August 13 witness went to Barr street, Mornington, to which locality a number of the circulars were to have been deliv -cd, and. found a bundle of them hidden in a hedge, and a good many more lying about the street. On August 15 accused made a statement admitting that, on June 24, he had, instead of delivering 120 circulars entrusted to him, delivered about 50 only, and hidden the remainder under a broom bush on an empty section. He did this merely to save himself the trouble of delivering them, and at the time did not realise the seriousness of the offence. —To Mr Barrowclough: The circulars were advertising matter only, and were of no intrinsic value. Nevertheless, the department received a good deal of revenue by delivering such matter. —Accused pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence, bail being allowed in his own recognisance of £25 and one surety of £25. An application for the suppression of the name was refused.
