RAVENSBOURNE AMENITIES SOCIETY.

The fifth annual meeting of the Eavensbourne Amenities Society was held last Saturday evening in the Council Chambers. Mr H. E. Holler (president) presided over a small attendance of members. The annual report stated, inter alia, immediately after last annual meeting the trees on the embankment from the railway bridge to Smith’s Jetty were trimmed, and in some instances trees that were malformed through neglect and overcrowding were removed. Unfortunately, in the past the plantation on the north side of the railway station has not been attended to, with the result that many of the trees became very unsightly in shape. An improvement is now noticeable, and it is to bo hoped that the remainder of the trees further along the embankment towards Maia will be attended to this year. The trees on the city side of Manuka street, which were trimmed three winters ago, are now branching out again after the severe pruning they received, proving that the time and trouble spent there was well worth while. The work of cleaning up the three zigzags was attended to, as usual, before Christmas, with the pleasing result that the shrubs, which are now well established, are looking better than ever. By arrangements with the Dunedin Returned Soldiers’ Association, poppies were sold on Poppy Day by a ladies’ committee under the control of Mrs C. Tomlinson, and over £ll was obtained. This money can be spent in the work of the society on condition that the amount is subsidised £ for £. During the year Mr A. Grubb, a valued member "of the committtee, died- The late Mr Grubb was always anxious to forward the interests of the society, and his loss will be much felt in the district. The report and balance sheet were adopted. The following office-bearers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mr John Fraser ; vice-presidents —Messrs H. E Moller, A. H. Williamson, W. Connor, T. Ross, and A. Bathgate; chairman of committee, Mr J. Low; secretary and treasurer, Mr F. Mitchell; auditor, Mr W. G. Gale; committee—Mesdames J. Low, C. Anderson, and A. Laing, Messrs J.
