FOREST FIRES
AMERICAN STATES SWEPT. MANY TOWNS ENDANGERED. (Prow Aeeoolatlon—By Telegraph—Copyright. NEW YORK, April 14. (Received April 15, at 5.5 p.m.) Hundreds of forest fires throughout six New England States and New York have laid waste thousands of acres of wood lands, and endangered many farms and towns They have also resulted in one death. , , Fires on Long Island have menaced some of the finest estates in America, and over 1000 volunteer fire fighters, in addition to the regular forces, have been working for several days to save the small towns contiguous to Novy York city In several cases sparks ignited town buildings, vvhioli could not ho saved. The dry spring weather, virtually amounting to a semi-drought through the north-eastern seaboard, has increased the danger, particularly since these fires are occurring in the most densely-populated America,. —A. and N.Z.
