BROWN DIDN’T WIN THE ART UNION. Brown opened the evening paper and settled himself back in his cosy armchair to read the results of the latest art union. Alas! Mr Brown’s number was not there. “Oh, well,” he said resignedly, “I might have won it,” and under the soothing influence of his fragrant tobacco he gave himself up to his thoughts. It should be mentioned that Brown’s favourite brand was Bears’ Cut Plug, sold loose at 8d an ounce. No wonder he was always so self-satisfied and content. Next time you enter a tobacconist’s take Brown's advice; ‘‘Try Bears’ Cut Plug or the Smoking Tobacco (Mild).” —Advt. The original inventoi of the reaping machine was the Rev Patrick Bell, a former minister of Carmyllie, in Forfarshire.
