FIRES.
SEVERAL LOCAL OUTBREAKS. FIVE-ROOMED HOUSE DESTROYED. The firemen at the Central Station had little rest yesterday and on Thursday night. No fewer than six outbreaks claimed their attention, and the South Dunedin Brigade also responded to a call. _ The first call was received at 5.40 p.m. on Thursday to a bush fire on the Town Belt, The outbreak was extinguished before it had gained a strong hold. At 6.4 on the same evening a chimney fire 'n Kenmure road brought the brigade out, and a second chimney fire at Fitzroy street, Caversham. at 9.55 received the attention of the South Dunedin Brigade. A bush fire in the VVoodhaugh Gardens at 10.22 was suppressed by the City Brigade. A more arduous task confronted the brigade at 2.50 a.m. yesterday, however, when an outbreak occurred in a five-roomed wooden dwelling in Craigleith street, NorthEast Valley. The contents of the house, which was owned and occupied by Mrs Jenkins and her daughter, wore completely destroyed, and the building was extensively damaged. No particulars of insurance were available yesterday. Fire broke out shortly after 8 a.m. .n an iron building on the Main South road used jointly by. Messrs Wren and Co. as a paint factory and Messrs Douglas and Boatson. furriers. The contents of the portion used'by Messrs Wren and Co. wore only slightly damaged, but the damage p to Messrs Douglas and Beatson’s stock, which was not insured, is estimated at £2OO. The roof of the building, which is owned bv Messrs Wren and Co., was badiv damaged. The loss is covered in the Southern Union office, hut the extent of the insurance was not available yesterday. The faulty setting of a stove pipe is considered to he the cause of the blaze. An outbreak occurred at 2 o clock_ yesterday afternoon when paint was being removed with a blow-lamp from Mr R. b. Rtedman’s two-storeyed wooden reeidenco at 157 Carrol street. Two rooms were damn~cd. The building is insured in the 1 : .ironix office, and the contents in the London and Lancashire office.
