Sergeant David Stewart has retired on superannuation and on the occasion was made the recipient of a wallet of notes, an armchair, and an illuminated address. The address mentioned the period of sen ice of Sergeant Stewart, who arrived in New Zealand by the Crusader, and soon after ioined in the expedition against ie Kooti. He later joined the armed constabulary. at Rahotu, Taranaki, in 1881, and three years later he was transferred to the police in Wellington. Seven years of his early experience in the force were spent at Dunedin, and eight years at Alexandra and Cromwell, during the mining boom. He then went to Manners street, Wellington, for two years, and then promotion came, which saw mm wearing his badge of rank at Mount Cook, and he was there for six years before being transferred to Addington, where he served until his retirement.
