I ‘ According to the figures compiled by o the Commonwealth Statistician, the population of Australia on December 21 last was 6,110,514, an increase of 118,430 during the year. Of the increase the excess of births over deaths was 76,210, and the excess of arrivals over departures 42,220. a New South Wales is the most popu- n loua State, with 2,347,781 inhabitants. 1 The population of Tasmania decreased by 2278. The other States all showed substantial increases.
