EYESIGHT AND HOMEWORK.

TO THE EDITOR. Sin, —From' time to time you publish articles issued by tho Health Department, giving advice to parents as to tiro diet, fresh air and recreation which is absolutely necessary for growing children if they aro to grow up into healthy men and women. In a recent issue wo were warned of tho great harm which might be done to the sight of our children by allowing them, to read when tired. This advice is all well and good, and wo would gladly carry it out if the present system of education allowed it. But what is the position? On tho one hand wo have tho Health Department warning us of thp grave danger brought abou*: by cyo strain, and on tho other wo have tho schoolmaster who demands two or three hours’ homework from our children. As the children have already had over five hours of school, it goes without saying that this extra work is done under considerable strain in artificial light. Perhaps you could use your influence with tho Health Department, and get it to make a pronouncement in regard to the amount of homework which children of various ages should bo called on to do? —I am, etc. Anxious Parent.
