THE UPPER CHAMBER

MB LANG RENEWS CAMPAIGN. GOVERNOR’S RECALL DISCUSSED. (Press Association —By Telegraph Copyright.) SYDInTEY, March 3. (Received March 3, at 5.5 p.m.) It has been known for some time that Mr Lang intended to renew the controversy with the Governor regarding appointments to the Upper House. The Attorney-general (Mr E. A. M'Tiernan), commenting on his Excellency s refusal, said it was contrary to the Constitution. It is now the Government’s intention to launch a campaign against the Governor and the Upper House- The Government is being urged by trade unions and labour officials to ask the Dominions Office to recall the Governor ; but it is generally considered in political circles that the authorities in England will refuse to accede to the request in view of the reply recently given to the Attorney-general when he was in England by Mr Amery. The Government is not likely to appeal to the electors, as there are still 14 months of its term of office unexpired, and it is known that although Mr Lang favours an election, members of the Caucus are unanimously opposed to such action. The women’s demonstration at Government House yesterday was organised by the Australian Labour Party, and headed by a number of women who are prominent in Labour circles ; but it was in no way a representative gathering. The leader stated afterwards that the Governor bad agreed to meet a deputation on Monday next.
