NEGLIGENT MOTORISTS.
COMMENT BX MAGISTRATE. PUBLIC MUST BE PROTECTED. (Pee United Peess Association.) STRATFORD, January 24. At the Magistrate’s Court Mr R. W. Tate, S.M., dealt with a lengthy list of speeding cases and breaches of the motor by-laws, including several cases of crossing railway intersections whilst trains wore approaching. He said the more he heard of these cases the more it confirmed his opinion that the majority of the defendants were altogether unfitted to drive motor vehicles. The only method of protecting the public was by the concellation of licences. John Luke Flmtoff, a farmer, of Inglewood, was charged with being drunk while in charge of a car and with a breach of a prohibition order. Defendant admitted having had two “spots” in Eltham. On the way home he crashed into the back of a car standing off the road at MJdhirst, and collided with another at Tariki. The evidence showed that he wished to fight the owner of the first car. His wife proceeded home in another car after Ihe collision, refusing to travel with him. His license was cancelled and he was disqualified from driving for 12 months. No fine was imposed.
