The ruling favourites for the Dunedin Trotting Cup are Black Admiral, Jack Potts, Nelson Derby, and Parkwood. A large field of 27 horses is engaged in the Electric Handicap at Forbury Park on Friday, and the public’s fancy is Final M'Kinney and Firpo. The former is owned and trained by J. Henderson at Oamaru, while the latter is a recent addition to M. B. Edwards’s team. The Telegraph Handicap at Trentham was a triumph for South Island horses, who filled .he three places, tho winner. Booster, and the runner-up, Paperchase, coming from Riccarton, and the third horse. Corn Money, from Wingatui. Absurd has a groat record in the Wellington Stakes, his progeny having won tli-, race six times in the last seven years. Some people had the idea that Te Monanui won tho Wellington Cup. His rider, L. G. Morris, was among the number, and it is said he approached an official on tho subject after the race. Those in the best position to see agreed that there was no room for doubt that Rapier was in front at tho winning post. Referring to the running of the Aspendale Plate “Cardigan” writes, inter alia:— Tommy Dodd was last all the way. He commenced slowly, but was so sore that he could not gallop a bit. It will be necessary to ease him up before he wins again. Dempsey rode him, and he must have wondered what on earth was the matter. Jumping races have taken 1’ fancy of the fair sex in England, and they are being strongly represented this season at meetings under National Hunt rules. At Birmingham a few weeks ago six of tho 20 runners for the Bromford Hurdle Race were owned, by women, but they did not furnish a place-getter. It amused me recently, when discussing tho short price at which a horse opened to hoar a bookmaker say: “They blame the press.” Now, no one knows better than that bookmaker —from his own experience—that some trainers, more than pressmen, are responsible for hints about horses in different stables. As ' have often written, trainers have more to fear from trainers than anyone else, when it comes to booming and tipping (writes “Pilot” in the Referee). In any city the trainer has only a few horses in his charge, and rarely turns out a winner, has to make ends meet somehow, and even some who are in a fair position financially are not averse to- a present from a punter if they give him a winner trained bv someone else. If a trainer sees a horse do what he reckons is a winning gallop there is no reason why he should not put his own money on, but it is quite another matter when, by tipping it to punters or bookmakers, he spoils the market for those associated with it. In every metropolis there are trainers who do better out of other people’s stables than tho I- own, and without risking their own money either. Another thing, as between pressmen and trainers, is that people who would scarcely listen to any of the former, will swallow anything told them by a trainer, no matter how mediocre he has shown himself in his celling. The fact that he is a trainer is. sufficient for them to credit him with knowledge .nd judgment often completely be; ond him. According to a compilation made by Mr T. H. Lowry the descendants of his brood mare Gossip have, between stake money and yearling sale prices, brought in no less than £60,000. Gossip was sold in 1905 at Mr H. Friedlander’s sale of the Kelburn Lodge Stud, Ashburton, for 340 guineas, with a foal at foot by Pilgrim’s Progress, and in foal to the same sire. At the same sale, a yearling by Finland from. Gossip, subsequently known as the flying Bobrikoff, was sold at 80 guineas. At the Newmarket December sale the Hon. G. Lambton bought the six-year-old mare Crispena, by Charles o‘Mally—Va Via, for SJOOgns, and the young Hurry On mare. Hasty Love, went to the bid of Mr Fred Darling at 5400gns. The 23 lots from the Fort Union Stud realised 39,040gn5. Lord Astor’s four-year-old Ascot Royal Hunt Cup winner. Cross Bow, who was led out unsold previously, was subsequently disposed of privately at SOOOgns to Mr J. Gardner. This year’s sales, the forty-first December sales to be held at Newmarket, have been more successful than any previous December auction. The last day’s aggregate of R3,2l9gns made the total for the five days 435,521gn5. Last year’s total was 353,287gn5. And yet they say England is in a parlous condition. No man in Tasmania had a higher reputation and popularity as a sportsman than Mr R. D. Lord, who has just died. Ho was one of the old hunting men, and all his love was for horses, although he did good service as an alderman. The funeral of this good old sportsman was conducted in accordance with his own expressed wishes. On the coffin were placed his old red coat, a velvet cap, and his hunting crop. That was nothing much, but what ’vuade the funeral unique, was that all the bprses, hearse and mourning coaches in the equipage went to the cemetery at a fart trot. The dear old gentleman had declared that ho was not going to crawl to his grave; nothing slower than a trot would do for him. The purchase by Lord Woolavington, ofHurry On (Marcovil —Tout Suite) as a yearling for 500gns has turned out to be one of the greatest bargains ever made in connection with blood-stock sales. After a successful _ career on the race track, bis wins inluding the Newmarket and St Leger (40 to 1 on)), and Jockey Club Cup (25 to 1 on), he was retired to the stud. His success as a sire was immediate, and astonishing, for the produce of Bellavista, the first mare with whom he was mated, was Captain Cuttle, the Derby winner of 1922, and amongst a host of other winners of his getting are such as Plack, winner of the One Thousand Guineas, and 10,590 so vs in stakes, Town Guard, a brilliant but unlucky colt. Diligence, now standing at the National stud, and whose yearling brother has been recently bought by H.H. the Aga Khan for 16,000 guineas (the highest price ever paid for a yearling), and Coronach, tho brilliant winner of last rear’s Derby and St. Leger. How good Hurry On was as a racehorse no one will ever know, for no one of bis opponents could ever take his measure, and of his career as a stallion it is to be said that he h as already sired two Derby winners, and that with 56,963 sovs earned by 13 of his sons and daughters last season he is the chamnion sire of the year. Nominations for an A.J.C. or Victoria Derby are now invariably much more numerous than those for an English Derby (says the Sydney Referee). There are 612 entries for this year's A.J.C Derby, and 552 for the V.R.C. Derby, while for the English Derby of 1928 the total is 350, the Aga Khan, with 19, being the principal subscriber. Although tho nominations for each of Australia’s principal Derbies nearly double those for the Epsom event, the latter is sure to have the greater number of runners. This suggests that each year the percentage of three-year-olds with pretensions to class is much iigher in England than in Australia. “Rapier,” writing in a recent Sporting and Dramatic News, had the following interesting paragraph about tho young Australian trainer Stanley Wootton ; —He has made it his business to train" jockeys as well as horses, and ho finds both profitable. Tt is said that he is_ gloomy about the outlook when the betting tax comes into operation Perhaps that _ is why his activities are so extensive this year, for his successes must mean (hat the money is coming to him in embarrassing masses. He and most of those who have the good fortune to have horses in his stable bet substantially. Between them (hey must have won a great deal during 1926. I

believe Wootton is now proprietor of the j training rights at Epsom, and we may ] hear before long that he really intends to rule his newly acquired kingdom. He has at any rate snown us that many winners can be trained on comparatively restricted ground at Epsom. They are not classic winners, and so far they do not include a Cesarewitch winner, but they bring in riches, because Wootton advertises the value and virtue of placing horses in their proper class. If he errs at all it is in putting them in races under their right class. He has shown us there is the slenderest partition between the selling plater and the rest. For betting purposes there is probably none at all in the owner-traineS’s opinion. And, if you can buy in your winners at well under their real value, “what boots it?” as someone of old remarked. WELLINGTON RACING CLUB. STAR STRANGER WINS BIG RACE. CLOSE FINISH IN METROPOLITAN. (Peb United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, January 22. The weather was fine but dull for the second day of the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting. The track was in good order, allowing of excellent racing, in which there were some close finishes. The Wellington Cup meeting was continued on the anniversary ol the province, and with the assistance of a general holiday a very large attendance viewed the racing. The weather was tine, but dull, and the going appeared harder than on the opening day. The card provided some very interesting racing, and dose finishes were of frequent occurrence. Mint Leaf was a totally different horse in the Mungaroa High- Weight Handicap. On the first day he gave the impression of being a slow beginner, but to-day he jumped out second behind Wedding March, and although losing a bit of ground when running round the sharp turn to the mile post, was always in a winning position, and had the race won shortly after turning into the straight. Assurance was badly ridden in the Trial Plate. He was again slow away, and then covered a lot of ground. He nad the race won down the distance post and faded before reaching the winning post. Crossbow ran the best race of the beaten division, as he was badly placed three furlongs from home, and then came on to finish close to the placed lot. With a pull in the handicap for a defeat principally brought about by interference in the first day, Centrepiece landed the January Welter Handicap. Rscal was finishing well, but Corn Money again found a mile a bit too far. Paleta won like a high-class colt, and must be considered one of the best of the year, as ho won in really good style under 9.5, Laughing Prince was fims.u well, but had no chance with the winner at even weights. Strong support came for Star Stranger cowards the close of the betting on the Wellington Racing Club Handicap, and although Piuthair looked a'winner at the distance, Star Stranger came with a long and well-sustained run to beat her on the post. Footfall would have been more dangerous if he had received a better passage round the top, and Front Rank was allowed to run herself out and so settled her chan.ce. She should be more dangerous over a shorter course. The Douro Cup saw the well-backed Vesperus triumph by a narrow margin from Stormy, and they practically had the finish to themselves. Paperchase was a bit unlucky to miss the Metropolitan Handicap, which she lost through missing the jump-out. At the weight a more competent rider should havo been obtained. The race provided a thrilling finish, a_s the first four flashed across the line with little or nothing between them. F. E. Jones rode a perfect race on Sag ittarius, but, despite his excellent horse manship, found Lady Ideal a very narrow margin in front when they crossed the lino. Any comment on the racing could not be made without drawing attention to the marked contrast in form displayed by Mint Loaf, Star Stranger, and Vesnerus. Although Mintleaf finished close up on the first day. the fact remains that ho ran a very much better horse to-day, and a strong finish does not excuse apparent dilatoriousness in the early part of a race. No one could back Star Stranger to-day on his first day’s form, but he nevertheless won and won well, as he could have increased his winning margin if more ground had been in front of the field. On the first day Vesperus carried £2lB. and in the Douro Cnp-was sent out favourite with £2366 on his number. Such things might be open to an acceptable explanation, hu* apparently did not . attract official attention ao nothin

nature of an inquiry reached the press : room. In fact, the two days’ racing at Trentham are quite sufficient to convince anyone who knows, that the control of the sport is really most unsatisfactory. Mintlcaf was made a short-priced favourite for the Mungaroa High-weight Handicap, in which Wedding March was first out. The favourite also began wed. and was in second place as they left the straight. Both dropped back a bit, and Bennaneo led along the back and into the straight. Here Mintleaf came on and won comfortably by three lengths from Wedding March who did not seem able to gallop. When running down the back she came through from the false rail and beat Bennanee hy two lengths for second place. Lady Passenger was close up fourth, well clear of the balance of the field. Assurance was backed down to loss than a fair price about his chance in Trial Plate, in which he was again slow on his legs. When the barrier rose Zarisee led out from Crown Area, Kilmoyler and Serotina, and they ran in that order to the far turn. Assurance was raced up on the outside on the on side of the field and he landed in behind the leaders, and before reaching the home turn Crown Area, Assurance. and Zarisee led Serotina rtto the straight, and Assurance looked a winner approaching the distance, hut the ground he lost at the start and the extra ground covered told a tale, and Crown Area beat him by two lengths. Serotina was half a length away, third, and Crossbow, who had made up a lot of ground, finished a good fourth. Crossbow was badlv placed about half a 1 mile from home, and, with a ’ ’iter run, would have just about won, apart from Assurance, who requires bet handling than he nas received at the meeting. The January Handicap proved to be a really good betting race, with Ring the Bell finishing a better favourite than Centrepiece, despite the fact that the latter had a good pull in the weights. On the first day’s form Inferno was not allowed to lino up with the others, but stood half a dozen lengths in the rear. Corn Money got squeezed out when the barrier rose, | and when the field settled down Joy Bird was supplanted in the load by Decoy Bird, who began badly. A little later Corn Money and Inferno joined the leaders, who were closely attended by Rascal, Centrepiec. Ring the Bell, and Perle de Leon Decoy Bird led into the straight, but at the distance Centrepiece was drawing to the front, and, ridden out. won by threeparts of a length from Rascal, who was coming on again, and beat Joy Bird by half a length for second place. Royal Damon and Corn Money were close to the placed lot. All on the card went out for the Nursery Handicap, in which Thaw finished a fairly good favourite, carrying about £l5O more than Otairi, who was closely followed by Ti Tree and Paleta. Chips and Paleta were the smartest out, and the latter, who drew No. 11, appeared to cut out Don Jose, who began from No. 10. As they came to the straight, Chips, Paleta, ana Otairi wore showing the way, and when in the straight Paleta came away and won ; well by two lengths from Laughing Prince, who beat Otairi by half a length. Tone and Chips were right up with the third Footfall was generally regarded as having a really good chance in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap, as he beat all in the field that ran in the Wellington Cup, and met them on almost the same terms. Star Stranger was showing a good price in the early part of the betting, but towaraa ' the close strong support came, and ho finished a good second favourite. . Star Stranger could not be backed on his form in the Wellington Cup, but no doubt many backed him, as he was the stable selection. Front Rank was at once raced to the front, and at the mile post was fully half a dozen lengths in front ot Alloway, Footfall, Piuthair, and Mask, and she increased her lead going along the back, but Alloway, Piuthair, and Footfall with the others wera in close order. Front Rank was still clear as they ran round the top, where Footfall appeared to bo getting a slightly bad run as the field closed up when approaching the home turn. Front Rank led Piuthair into the straight, and the latter took charge at tho distance and got about two lengths clear, but Star Stranger came with a strong run and, getting up in tho last stride, won by a head. Footfall came on and finished two 1 lengths away third, half a length in front i of Front Rank. Merry Day and Alloway i were next. The winner’s form was in rather marked contrast to that displayed on tho first day. Count Cavour failed to carry his load jn a fast run race in which the winner put up an Australasian record. Fresco finished so close up that she must have boon far more dangerous if patiently handled. Footfall also ran a good race, and so did Piuthair. who was unlucky to get touched off by a horse that could not be fancied on his recent form. Great Day and Royal Picture were tho only horses struck out of the Douro Cup, leaving 19 to go to the post. Vesperous finished favourite and outside of Queen s Choice and Stormy anything was paying a good price. Thev got aiyay from an excellent line, but Gold Mint, Battle Colours and Queen’s Choice were slow in the jump away. Brpnstell and Son o’ Mine led out from Gardant, and at tho far turn Bronstell and Son o' Mine were still in charge from Vesperus, Gardant,. Jemidar, Stormy, Uosenor, Starboard Light and Outfit running in close order. Bronstell and Son o’ Mine led into the straight from Vesperus, Starboard Light, Outfit and Stormy. Vesperus raced to the front at the distance and had Stormy in pursuit, but the former lasted long enough to win by a very narrow margin. Kilmiss was three lengths away, followed by Vertigern, Outfit, Starboard Light and Peggy fiord. Limited was made a strong order for tho ' Metropolitan Handicap and carried nearly twice as much money as Paperchase, who went out next in demand. At the rise of the barrier Limited, Licinius, Receipt, and Nadarino wore first to show, and Paperchase seemed to dwell. Limited, Receipt, Licinius, and Nadarino led the way to Mimetic and Paperchase to the turn, and at the distance Limited and Receipt were in charge. Paperchase began to put in a , claim, and Limited was beating Receipt 100 yards from home, when Paperchase came through and Benzora came wtih a good run on tho outside. A groat finish saw Limited and Paperchase flash past the post together, whilst Benzora was apparently in lino with them. The judge made a dead heat and half a head verdict. Receipt was a length and a-half away with the others a couple of lengths further back. If Paperchase had not missed the jump out she would have won, and it may be worthy of note that Benzora was finishing more strongly than anything. Sagittarius was made the hottest favourite of the day in connection with the Camp Handicap, in which he put up 2glb overweight to obtain the services of P. E. Jones. Lady Ideal, Sagittarius and Royal Tractor were showing the way when the field got going, and Dark Spot was close up on tho rails. Lady Ideal and Sagi- . tarius came on together, but Jones seemed | to bo a bit uneasy on the favourite, who, , however, was being patiently handled, j Jones made a final effort near tho post, , but Lady Ideal beat him by a nose. Some Lad wag a good two lengths away third. | and then came Baby Bun and Royal i Tractor. THIRD DAY’S ACCEPTANCES.
