SPORTS AT MASTERTON.

AUSTRALIAN CHAMPION’S SUCCESSES. (Peb U kited Pbess Association.) MASTERTON. January 23. Glorious weather prevailed for the Masterton Club’s sports meeting on Saturday, a feature of which was the appearance of Lamb, the Australian cyclist. The visitor displayed great ability, and appeared to handle the turning track far better than, did Harness on his visit two years ago. Great interest centred in Lamb’s contests with T. Oakley, and. in thrilling finishes, he conquered the local rider by two_ events to one. Lamb was unplaced in his heat of the mile, the final of which was won 1 by H. Oakley in 2min 13sec. The Australian won the one mile and a-ha!f invitation scratch race by a wheel from T. Oakley, who led into the straight. P. Harrison (Wellington) was close ”o third. Time, 3min 15' l-ssec. In the three miles handicap race Harrison, from 150 yards, took the lead in the last lap, and won by five yards. Lamb again had the better of T. Oaklc- who was close up. third. Time, 7min 7seo, Lamb won his heat in the two miles handicap in 4min 42 2-ssec. T. Oakley winning his jn 4min 37sec. The final saw Oakley reverse the positions on the visitor, the local rider stealing a march and winning by 12 yards from Baker, who beat Lamb by a length for second place. Time, 4min 49 2-ssec. There were large fields, necessitating heats in all but the three miles and the scratch race.
