INDIAN LEGISLATURE
NEW ASSEMBLY ELECTED. LOSSES BY SWARAJISTS. CALCUTTA. December 8. Now that the elections for the All-India Legislative Assembly are practically completed, it is clear that the representation of the Swarajists is distinctly weaker than was the case in the old Assembly. They have done particularly badly in the Punjab and the United Provinces, , but scored some successes in Madras. In the Assembly the Swarajists are hardly likely to form more than 25 per cent, of the whole. In Madras the Independents have formed a Ministry. No news has yet been received from Bengal, where the anti-Swarajist parties could easily form a Government, were they not torn by factions. Although the Government position in the All-India Assembly is likely to be easier, it must not be forgotten that big political issues, like that of the currency, are matters' on which there is little difference of opinion between the Swarajist* and the Independents.
