(Per United Press Association.) GISBORNE, December 22. A decision was to have been given thb morning on a petition to upset the poll which decided in favour of scrapping the Gisborne municipal tram service. The Magistrate (Mr, E. C. Levvey) intimated, however, that, in view of the pending appeal from the decision of Mr Justice Herdman in the Takapuna case, he would re serve his decision on the question whether the electors should have been given,a vote. The other points were decided against the petitioners BLENHEIM, December 22. Robert John M’Nicol pleaded guilty before justices of the peace this morning to the theft of £5, the property of George Clifford Eden. Senior Sergeant Clarkson said (hat it was a particularly mean theft. Accused arrived in Nelson and went to stay with Eden, sleeping in the same room. The money was taken from a coat pocket. Accused was at present on probation for a similar offence. He was sentenced to three months hard labour and an order was made for the restitution of the stolen money. ASHBURTON. December 22. Durbar Lodge, owned by Mr H. F. Nicoll and occupied by his trainer (Mr D. Warren), was destroyed by fire early this morning. Mr and Mrs Warren, the only occupants, escaped hurriedly in their night attire, saving only a tew pictures. The house was a two-storey one of eight rooms The insurances are not available.
