ALLEGED PERJURY.

CHARGE AGAINST CONSTABLE. THE CASE ADJOURNED. At the City Police Court yeetei day. before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.. George Macartney, police constable. Mornington, was charged with committing perjury in the Supreme Court on November 3, 1926, in that he swore in evidence that he had never at any time struck J. W. Lockett a fc’ow of any description, either with his clenched fist or otherwise, during a struggle which took place in Kenmure road on July 23, and that Lockett was very drunk when he. Macartney, arrested him; that he staggered all over the road, and smelt of liquor; and that when he was in the watchhouse he was drunk. Mr A. C. Hanlcn, who appeared for the defendant. said he wished to have the summons adiourned till after the holidays, as he, counsel, was not prepared to go on with the case at present. Mr F. B. Adams (Crown prosecutor), who appeared to prosecute, said he had no objections to an adjournment. He would leave the matter to the court. This left the question of the constable’s suspension, or otherwise, an open one. He, counsel, understood that, according to the police regulations the question of defendant’s suspension was involved. If he were remanded there would be a suspension, but in the case of an adjournment being granted that might not be the ease. His Worship said he would adjourn the hearing of the case till January 14.
