THE MANGAIA NATIVES.

HEALTH GREATLY IMPROVED. (Special to Daily Times.) WELLINGTON, December 20. The health of the Natives of Mangaia, one of the principal islands of the Cook Group, has wonderfully improved during the past year, states Mr J. M Grath, resident agent and head teacher of the island, who was a passenger by the Makura to-day. Yaws has been checked and a determined effort is being made to stamp out hookworm. . , So far as the irmt crop is concerned, the natives have had a rather bad year owing to the poor prices for oranges, and the hurricane in April, which caused a serious diminution of the coconut yield, with a resultant reduction in the export of copra. A small party of Cook Island lads came by the Makura to continue their education in New Zealand.
