NORTH OTAGO.

(Faou Oub Special Correspondent.)

WAITAKI POWER BOARD

At the monthly meeting of the Wailaki Power Board, only the town members, with the addition ol Mr J. Newlands, were present. Mr R. Milligan presided. The payment of accounts amounting to £4797 14s lid was recommended by the subcommittee. which reported that the bank balance, after the payment of accounts, would be as follows:—Loan account, credit, £l2Ol 19s lOcl ; power fund, £1286 11s Aid. The Chairman explained that the debits by the customers from April to December amounted £5334. Of this amount £2069 had been paid, leaving £2465 outstanding. Mr W. H. Frith stated that if a customer did not pay his bill, ho should be required to pay interest. On the motion of Mr J. M. Forrester it was decided that interest at the rate of 8 per cent, be charged on all outstanding house-wiring accounts, and that provision be made in future contracts for such a ° of the staff, Mr I. Dalmer expressed his appreciation of the treatment received from the board during the year end wished members the compliments of the season. The greetings were reciprocated by the chairman and members of the board „ The engineer furnished a report on the month’s operations. He stated that great difficulty was being experienced in Recurinn- poles. They were asured, however, that some 482 'would be arriving about Christmas. The whole of these would be landed at Oamaru. Some trouble had been experienced with water-pipe work for hot water services. TOO MANY CONFERENCES. An-invitation for the engineer and secretary of the Waitaki Power Board to attend conferences at Auckland and Palmerston North respectively induced Mr W. H. Frith, at the meeting of the board last week, to remark that these conferences were a curse to the Dominion and a great expense to every public body. They were only an excuse for getting a cheap holiday at the expense of the taxpavers. The Chairman and Mr Forrester disagreed with Mr Frith. They considered these conferences were attended with considerable value. It was agreed that the secretary be given leave of absence to attend the Palmerston North conference, and that ho be requested to furnish a report of the proceedings to the board. ♦ THE FORESHORE. A number of contrivances for the pleasure of children have recently been placed on the Oamaru foreshore by the Friendly Bay Improvement Committee. These and other improvements were formally opened on Saturday bv tho Mayor (Mr J. M'Diarmicl) in the presence of a large number of people. Music was provided, and a pleasant afternoon was spent in ideal weather conditions. CHRISTMAS SERVICES. Christmas services were held in the various Oamaru churches yesterday. At Columba Church special solos were rendered in the evening by Mesdames Owens and Hoskm. Christmas carols were sung in most of the churches. SUNDAY CONCERTS. The Fifth Mounted Rifles* Band, tinder Conductor Whale, f?ave a special sacred cncero in the Oamaru Municipal Gardens yesterday afternoon. A collection was taken up in aid of the Dobson disaster relief fund. In the evening- the band gave a promenade concert on the foreshore, CONTRACTORS’ CHARGES. Reporting to the Waitaki Electric Power Board, the engineer-manager (Mr I. Dai-mc-r) stated that one or two cases of apparently excessive charges by contractors had been brought to his notice, particularly for the installation of cooking and water heating. As this would undoubtedly militate against electricity uses, the board might have to compete, even in town. Consumers could always obtain an estimate from the board, to ensure that a fair charge was being made. The Chairman remarked that tho public should be made aware of the fact that an estimate would be given by the board's officers for installations earned out by private contractors. THE TOTARA ESTATE. The death in Wellington of Mr .Tamos S. Holmes recalls the fact that the Totara estate, which was purchased by his father (the late Hon, Matthew Holmes) for the New Zealand and Australian Land Dorn pany, was subdivided for settlement just 20 years ago. For ” the 26 sections offered, there were no fewer than 173 applicants in the ballot. The rent of the various sections ranged from 12s 6d to 21s per acre, and at these prices the original settlers were enabled to make a good living. The areas of the farms ranged from 53 acres to 274 acres. The smaller areas were considered to be more adapted to dairy farming than the rest. PERSONAL. The Rev. J. J. North, principal of the Baptist Theological College at Auckland, spent the week-end in Oamaru. Ho conducted both services in the Baptist Churcß yesterday. . The death occurred at' Christchurch last week of Mr Bernard O’Brien, formerly of Hakataramea. . . Mr James Glenn, of Wanganui, is at present on a visit to Oamaru. Mr Walter J. Scott, of Temuka. has been appointed an assistant master in the M aitaki Boys’ High School. CALIFORNIAN THISTLE. The plebiscite on the question of retaining on or removing Californian thistle from tho schedule of noxious weeds in the Waitaki Countv. will be completed this evenuig. The first indications were that tho vote would favour the retention of the thistle on the schedule. It is now certain that there will be a fairly substantial majority—probably 20 per cent. —in favour of removal. The final figures will be announced 10-:-ncrrow. The vote has been a heavy one, and it is expected that over 2000 papers will be returned. The County Council, at its meeting to-morrow, will probably decide to give effect -to the wishes of the” majority of the ratepayers. AWAMOKO SPORTS. SMOKE CONCERT. ( A most enjoyable smoke concert was held on Saturday night, when the members of the Meadowbank Bowling Club met in honour of Mr H. Martin, who is shortly to be married. A lengthy toast list was gone through. In proposing the toast of the guest, Mr A. M'Kny said he thought all would agree that he was one of their most worthy members. His late father (Mr J. Martin) was known from Christchurch to the Bluff, and was one of the most respected bowlers in the South Island. These qualifications had descended to his son, who was one of the best bowlers in Oamaru, and also one of the best skips, as he could “wheedle” more out of his men than any other. In presenting Mr Martin with a silver tea service and Loewe pipe, Mr M'Kay said the club wished him every happiness and prosperity in his new sphere of life. The chairman’s remarks were endorsed by several members, all of whom spoke in eulogistic terms of Mr Martin, both as a man and as a bowler. Mr Martin, in reply, said that on behalf of his future wife and himself he thanked them most sincerely for the present they had given him. He also thanked them for the remarks in regard to his late father as a bowler EARLY CROPS. A crop of oats is already in stook in a paddock at Peebles.
