EAST TAIERI SCHOOL.

SEVENTIETH ANNIVERSARY. The jubilee celebrations of the East Taieri School to mark the seventieth anniversary were commenced in the Coronation Hall, Mosgiel, last night. The hall was packed, and prior to the opening of the social the Mosgiel Brass Band played a programme of music. Mr A. Miller was chairman, and supporting him on the platform were the Mayor of Mosgiel (Mr J. P. Walls), Mr T. K. Sidey, M.P., Mr J. W. Blair (chairman of the Taieri County Council), Mr James Wallace (chairman of the Otago Education Board) and Messrs William Allan and William Blackie (representing the committee). Addresses were given by the Mayor; Mr J. W. Blair, Mr Sidey, and Mr Wallace. The Chairman detailed the history of the school over the 70 years. Songs were sung by Mrs Algie, Mrs Sproule, Miss Williams, Miss Burn, and Mr Walmsley. The, Logan Family Orchestra played orchestral selections. Mr William Blackie, on behalf of his many friends, presented Mr Waddell with a handsome easy chair, and Mrs Todd (one of the first pupils of the school) presented Mrs Waddell with a case of cutlery. Mr Waddell made suitable acknowledgment tlm gifts and the kindnesses bestowed on Mrs Waddell and himself. • ■ ■ . V 7. Little Miss Jean Dowie presented Mrs Waddell with a bouquet and Master Peter Miller conferred a similar compliment on Miss Waddell. In the second half of the programme addresses were given by Mr Walter Blackie. Rev. G. Miller, and Win. Allan. The celebrations will be continued today, when a rc-union, roll-call and picnic will be h eld in the school grounds. A church service will be held at East Taieri Church on Sunday.
