SWIMMING.

OTAGO CHAMPIONSHIPS. The initial session of the Otago swimming championships was held last night at the Municipal Baths in tho presence of an exceedingly disappointing attendance. Entries were poor, and in no fewer than four races there was one competitor only, which detracted from tho interest in the events and militated against fast times. Nevertheless, some good racing was witnessed, and, taking all tho circumstances into consideration, some fair times were registered. The race of the evening was undoubtedly tho 100 yards ladies’ championship, in which the two old rivals, Misses K. Miller and M. Jepson were the only competitors. Getting away to a good start, both girls swam neck and neck to within a couple of yards of the finish, when Miss Jepson forged ahead to win by a touch in the excellent time of 71sec. No competition was' forthcoming in tho 220 and 440 yards championships, and tho present holder of the title, C. J. M’Lean, had a swim over in both events. J. Sparrow swam a good race to win the heat of the 33 1-5 yards interclub handicap from the limit mark, and his victory in tho final was a good effort. As was expected, C. B. Lewis was not seriously pushed in the 100 yards breast-stroke championship, and won as ho liked. Tho 25 yards school girl’s race brought forward only throe contestants, Misses P. and C. Lang and N. Olds, who finished in tho order named after a close race. R. Calder, as ho always docs, dived well, and retained his title against H. Walker, who does not appear to have properly recovered yet from the injury he suffered to his shoulder recently. The following are the results: 25 Yards Schoolgirls’ Championship. Three entries—P.
