MILTON NOTES.

(From Odh Own Correspondent.) MILTON, December 9. PERSONAL. Mr S. P. Eddy, postmaster at Otaki, has been appointed to a similar position at Milton, caused by the recent transference of Mr J. S. Jordan to the department’s inspection branch at Wellington. BOROUGH WATER SUPPLY. At the invitation of the Milton Borough Council, Mr E. Fletcher Roberts, engineer, Dunedin, attended a special meeting of the council to discuss his recent report on the proposed reservoir scheme, to replace the temporary pumping system in operation since the water tower collapsed. A discussion ensued, and the reservoir scheme was deferred in the meantime.—Mr Roberts was authorised to cable to England for particulars of an automatic pumping scheme, which latest reports state has been successfully adopted by some towns in Great Britain. FIRE BOARD. The quarterly meeting of the Milton Fire Board was held on Wednesday, and was attended by Messrs G. H. Thomson (Government representative), who presided, Priest and Neill (insurance companies- representatives), L. W. Potter and Jas. Gray (Borough Council representatives). . , , Notifications were received from the Minister of Internal Affairs to the effect that Messrs T. L. Sheppard and Co., also the South Island Motor Union Insurance Association, had been added to the list of companies transacting insurance business in New Zealand. Accounts amounting to £2O 6s were passed for payment. The Brigade Superintendent (Mr W. H. Wells) reported that no calls had been received by the brigade during the past quarter. The plant was in good working order. Firemen W. Murray and J. Littlejohn had resigned owing to their employment taking them to other districts, and their places had been filled by ex-Fireman Milligan and Messenger M’Kinncy. Amongst other requirements were two new uniforms and caps to equip tho new members. —The report was adopted, and the purchase of the equipment authorised. CRICKET. llio first round of fixtures in the. South Otago Association’s shield competition in tho northern division will be terminated on Saturday afternoon, when Milton B team will meet Lovell’s Flat on the latter s ground, and Milton A team visit Kaitangata. Milton has the bye. The usual tour of a South Otago team through part of Central Otagc during the Christmas holidays has been abandoned owing to tho probability of the dates clashing with tho visit of an Invercargill team to tho Central, and several prospective members of tho South Otago team finding; it difficult to. get away owing to farming operations being backward. SOLDIERS’ MEMORIAL. That at least one outsider manifests interest in the Bruce fallen soldiers’ memorial site at, Milton is demonstrated by tho donation by Mr Bruce Rennie nurseryman, of Green 'island, of 14 boxes of annual flowering plants for beautifying the wellappointed grounds. The seedlings have; been planted out, are thriving well, and' should add greatly to the beauty of the grounds when in full bloom. The residents of Milton and relatives of fallen soldiers whose names are inscribed on the memorial are under a debt of gratitude to Mr Rennie for bis tribute to the memory of the departed.
