MILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. (FißOm Ouh Own Coesespondent.) MILTON, December 9. The monthly meeting of the. Mihon Borough Council, held on Wednesday evening, was attended by the Mayor (Mr L. W. Potter), Crs C. Grey, Y. A. Stewart, H. E. Ransome, Jas. Gray, A. Rennie, J. Littlejohn, Jas. Carruthers, and D. M'Donald. CORRESPONDENCE. The inward correspondence was dealt with as follows The Post and Telegraph Department, also the Q£ago Electric Power Boqrd, wrote granting permission to erect borough boundary sign-posts on their respective poics.— To be thanked for granting request. The South Otago Hospital Board adhered to its former decision declining to grant assistance towards metalling that portion of Johnston street at the rear of the Milton Hospital.—Received; no further action to be taken against the board meanwhile owing to the difficulty in assessing damage to the road by heavy traffic cartage to the hospital. Leckie and Stevens notified the cancellation of their annual rental of two feet of right of-way adjoining soldiers’ memorial site as from November 30. Received; fence to be removed back to the proper road line. J. B. M‘Kay, Dunedin, wrote that he would remove the wrecked portion of the water tower purchased by him when the weather conditions became more favourable. —Received. R. C. Paterson wrote complaining of the borough saleyards being used as weaning yards. If the practice were continued he intended to circularise a petition among ratepayers requesting that the saleyards je removed outside the borough boundary. It was decided that the saleyards be kept locked between sale days, except for drafting purposes, for which a special fee is charged. The Otago Education Board notified that from January 1 next all water and *mtory rates on schools are to be paid by school committees, or by head teachers tor such services to school residences.—Received. D. M. Mawson, clerk, applied for holiday leave from December 18.—Granted. office to be closed from December 20 to January 8 (both days inclusive). A circular letter from an Auckland association regarding license fees for performing rights of copyrighted music in public halls was referred to the Finance Committee. FINANCE. The Cemetery and Reserves Commission s report, presented by the chairman (Cr Ransome), showed that the cemetery grounds were being kept in excellent older by the caretaker.—Several orders bad been received by the council for the mMtenanoe of plots during the ensuing year, and it was decided to enforce strictly tho bylaws that the maintenance of plots must be carried out by the council s sexton at regulation charges Plot-owners may however. attend to their own plots.-The sexton was authorised to undertake concrete work for grave kerbings, and monumental masons are to be notified that the corporation buildings and storage bins are m future required 'for the council s own use Mr Bruce Rennie, of G-reen Island, had given 14 boxes of seedlings of annual flowering plants for planting at th soldiers’ memorial grounds. The report was adopted, WORKS COMMITTEE’S REPORT. Cr M'Donald (chairman) presented the Works Water and Lighting Committees report.' Extracts therefrom stated that throe water service connections had been installed during the past month, whilst other applications were held over pending the arrival of a consignment of water taps from Sydney. The water pumping machinery was continuing to work in a satisfactory manner. _ . , Three house drainage connections bad been made, and the Spenser street 9m main drain had been extended 14ft to make a connection with a new residential property. —General maintenance works bad been carried out by the day men.—l he borough foreman was granted 12 days holiday from December 24 The report was adopted, on the motion of Crs M'Donald and Littlejohn. NEGLECTED STREETS. Cr Rennie strongly criticised the condition of several back streets, which had been completely neglected and which consisted of a series of “pot-holes. He considered that the Works Committee should effect some repairs, and not permit the streets to get into a disgraceful condition as a legacy for the incoming council. The Mayor strongly commended the Works Committee for its. excellent work in putting the main street in thorough repair. The main street was disgraceful when the present council assumed office. GENERAL. It was decided to hold a “clean-up” week commencing on December 14. The Mayor extended the season’s greetings to councillors and staff and complimented the staff on the excellent work accomnlisbed during the past 12 months. —The kindly sentiments were acknowledged by the town clerk on behalf of the staff.
