CENTRAL OTAGO SHOW.

FIELD DAY AT OMAKAU. GOOD DISPLAY OF SHEEP. I The unsettled and unseasonable weather conditions of tho past few days changed for the better for tho annual summer show of the Central Otago A. and P. Society at Omakau on Wednesday. The weather was clear, but cold, a sharp wind sweeping the open showgrounds and making the later hours of the day bleak and unpleasant. A large crowd attended from all parts of the district, and a successful day was recorded Iby the society. The gate receipts totalled £27 15s —a slight decrease on those of iast year. Judging by tho number of motor cars parked around the show ring it would appear that the horse and gig has had its day in Central Otago. Various motor car distributing agencies had displays of new cars at the show. During the afternoon a nasty motor-car accident just outside the grounds caused some excitement. A car belonging to Mr J. Dundas, and driven by his son, who was accompanied by bis brother, capsized. The mishap was quickly noticed by the crowd around tho show ring, and in a few minutes the showgrounds were practically deserted. Men, women, and children rushed out to the gates to the scene of the accident. It wag found that the car, a Chevrolet, was practically a wreck The occupants escaped with little injury. Young Vincent Dundas managed to crawl out without assistance, but he collapsed a few minutes latter and was unconscious for some time. He recovered later, however. The other boy received a few scratches arid bruises, THE STOCK. Tho entry of live stock was not large. Sheep were the most numerous, and showed the best quality. The neighbouring districts are renowned for somq of their flocks, and some fine examples were forward. Tho merinos were the best class, the principal exhibitor being Mr R. Jopp (Moutere Station). These sheep have won honours in the best company in the South Island in previous years, and are among the best of the breed in Central Otago. Mr Jopp was challenged in several classes bv Mr H. Gibson, but in most cases the honours went to the Moutere breeder. Mr 0, White was the only exhibitor of Romney Maish,' and he showed some fine stock He also took a number of prizes in the crossbred and haifbred sections, dividing honours fairly evenly with Mr Jopp, Mr R. Butcher had a small bunch of Suffolks and a handful of Downs on show, but he met with no opposition. Fat sheep prizes were divided among Messrs Jopp, White and Butcher, all of whom bad highgrade animals entered. In a series of sheep classes created for owners of flocks numbering fewer than 1000 head, Mr C. White took all the prizes. These honours, however, did not count for the silver cup. which was won by Mr White for most points in sheep. The same exhibitor also annexed tho other silver cup presented for most points in sheep, cattle and horses. Air White's name "as to bo seen in almost every section. A small entry of cattle, about 10 in all did not keep the judge long. Mr C. VVhite divided the awards with Mr J. Bradley. 1 Last year Omakau boasted a good dis- ■ clay of draught horses, but the entry on | Wednesday fell a god bit short of the pre- | vious one. Only three exhibitors took the i field—Messrs Aitcheson, G. Harley and G. White—the last-named being most success- | ful. He exhibited some splendid animals, i particularly in the classes for two-horse i and three-horse working teams. There ! were only seven or e ; Tit classes in which i entries were received. Mr White secured i the female championship, and Mr Aitchci son’s Black Deane won tho male ribbon. I The light horse sections lacked the inter- ' est of former years. In all sections the eni try was poor and competition lagged. Some I fine utility animals were shown and some good display? of ridim? were given. The competitions created a good deal of interest. Mr G. Roberts (Palmerston) won all the honours in the leaping competitions with Puzzle, who has won a great many awards at different shows of late. Mise Gallagher and Miss Mathews lined up for the best lady rider class, the verdict being given fo r the former. Mr C. White’s nameacain figured on the prize-list in several ; places, Mr Roberts also won both stockmen’s races. The baking and dairy produce entries wore gqojl and a fine display of quality was to be seen. Mrs. J. J. Scott was the most consistent prize-winner in both departments and carried off the points prizes. , PRIZE LIST. The following is the prize-list:— HORSES. DRAUGHTS. (Judge: Mr A. Carruthers, Ngapuna).
