An eel 3ft Sin long and loin in circumference, was captured in the pond in the Queen’s Gardens (states the Nelson Evening Mail). This undesirable resident has made his presence well known for two years or more. • He has accounted for many of the young ducks which are brought down by their mothers from the breeding places up the Maitai River. This is the third big eel that has been caught in the ponds during the past three months. Mr Frost, the caretaker, is particularly _ pleased at this last capture, as eels have killed every young paradise duck during the past five years. It is believed that only small eels now remain in the ponds. “The Eskdale railway line is very expensive to work, and it is the belief of the Government that a bus service wilt meet all requirements in respect of pas senger traffic,’’ said Mr W. Marshall, commercial railway agent, speaking in Napier on the proposal to run bus services from Napier to Eskdale at frequent periods of the day.
