Readers are referred to an interesting statement on the Cement Industry appearing on Page 22, published by the British Standard Portland Cement, Limited.— Advt.
The Government has under consideration a scheme for afforestation on a block of land consisting of 33 : 00Q acres at Karioi which it has recently purchased from Mr W. Duncan. The Raetihi correspondent of the Auckland Star says that the block is highly suitable fc growing certain kinds of timber. A sum of £75,000 will be spent on the scheme in th< course of eight years, and about 75 per cent, of this amount will be spent In wages. As far as can be gathered the scheme will be gone on with if the Government does not meg! with any set ions opposition in the way of people insisting on the land being used for settlen ent. The land in question is decidedly third-class land and is not generally considered suitable for agricultural purposes. If the scheme goes forward it will be a gieat asset to the district.
