The curious phrase, “Under license pf a German company,” which appears in the announcement that the Admiralty is building a new submarine depotshin. is explained by the Daily News. It refers to the latest Augsbcrg pattern of Diesel engine. The Daily News points out that the late Lord Fisher, even in 1911. criticisd thp Admiralty for refusing to adopt Diesel engines, when he said he wanted a design for a motor battleship with no funnels and no smoke, and employing a handful of chauffeurs, instead of hundreds of stokers and engineers At present the only vessels cf the navy equipped with Deisel engines are submarines and monitors.
