PRODUCERS AND CONSUMERS

NEW SOUTH WALES CONFERENCE. (FeOM 008 Owtt COEBESPONDEKT.) September 16 For some time the State Government has been tickling the ears of producers and con Burners by announcements of a big conference which is to be representative of both classes, and which, it would appear, is going to be tho sovereign remedy for a lot of their troubles. Tho Government, however, has found bricks and not bouquets being figura-

tively hurled at it from all quarters over the conference which is being so spec taculary staged. On the part of the producers, it has evoked, not benedictions, but a chorus of protests. As for the consumers, they have not worried about it at all. They see a good deal of commissions and conferences, but not very much arising out of them. The various producers’ organisations, for in stance, do not quite see the justice of having oho delegate while the Trades and Labour Council is to have about eight delegates. Again, they think it difficult to justify a policy which allots one official representative among the 12,000 members of the Primary Producers’ Union, and no fewer than 1J re presentatives to tho Agricultural Bureau, which has a considerably smaller member ship. The Graziers’ Association, too, is ccmnlaining about having too little repre eentation. If the conference is going to be approached in this delightful spirit of amity, it will not be quite tho success which the Government at least anticipates. In trying to please every one the Government finds it is pleasing no one.
