TAIERI COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Taieri County Council was presided over by Or J. VV. Blair (chairman). Crs Walter Blackie, Alex. Scott, it. A. Kempshcll, b . Doherty, T. Carruthcrs, D. MTntosh, and Charles Findlay were also in at nee. REPORTS. The Finance Committee report.od that the receipts for the month had been £1037 14s 7d, and recommended payment of accounts totalling £2705 19s 2d. The bank pass book showed a debit balance of £4744 12s 4d.—The committee recommended that a petrol tank pump be installed in the county yard. This would effect a considerable saving. The question of procuring a road grader had been considered, and it had been decided that, before any further negotiations for machinery had been entered into, the treasurer should report as to the council’s linancial position, and also inquire regarding the terms of purchase through the Main Highways Board. Tho committee recomflionded accordingly.—Agreed to, and report edonted. The Inspector of Works reported for the month ending September 15 as follows: East Taieri Riding.—3Bs yards of maintenance gravel has been run out by motor lorry from tho Silvorstrcam dump on Main Highway No 1 from Cullen’s to Green Island. AVatcr-tables have been cleared from Riccarton to Saddle Hill. Gravel

has been graded in with the small grader on Riccarton. Gladstone, and Owhiro roads; also on Main- Highway No. 2 from Gordon road to West Taieri bridge. The now motor lorry came to hand on September 10, and is working satisfactorily. The Republic truck has been sent to work in West Taieri district. 1 wish to draw tho attention of the council to the Silverstream bank through Murdoch’s property There is a number of rabbit-holes through the bank. If they are allowed to remainin the event of a flood taking place—all the work which we have done recently on the bank at this place will be danger of being destroyed. I would recommend a general clean tin of the bank of the stream right through. North Taien Riding.—The following roads id this riding have been surfaced: Gordon. Powder lint, Silvorstrcam Valley, and School.

Kaikorai Riding.—Maintenance metal has been run out on Hamilton’s and Golf Links roads; also on Church Hill, Callaghan’s, and Mt. Grand rounds. A pipe crossing has been put in at Wilson’s store, Fairfield, Mr Wilson providing tho pipes. The water-tables have been dearc.cl from the Fairfield school to tho Coach and Horses.

Otokia Riding.—Tho following roads have been surfaced: Old Brighton, Scrogg’s Hill, Green Island to Taieri Mouth, Allanton township, and M'Laron’a' Gully. On Main Highway No. 1, 95 yards of maintenance metal has been run out from Cullens to Otokia. Tho running out of 300 yards of metal from Otokia to Henley is in progress. Two trucks o f metal have boon run out from tho v b kia railway station to the brid>-.

Outram Riding.—Contract No. 12: Delivery of 730 tons of •nletal in the Outram and Maungatna Riding, has been com pleted. Tho men have been engaged during the month in raking and blinding it. The following roads have been surfaced— Allanton to Outram. Allanton to Berwick, Hackett’s, and Beehive. Maungatua Riding.—Tho following roads have been surfaced—Outram to Berwick, Munro’s, Mill Crock Miss Kompsholl’s, Otokia, Maungatua, and Henley to Ber wick; on the hill, Lee Flat, Waipori, Main Highway No. 2, Outram to Lee Stream. On September 18, owing to a heavy fall of snow, it was found necessary to send a gang of men to clear the road through the Whare Creek so as to enable the mail coach to get through to Clark’s. Deep Stream Riding.—The following roads have been surfaced—Hindon Railway Hindon to Outram, and Hindon to Lee Stream. The Main Highway has been harrowed and graded from Lea Stream to Shannon. The work of putting in the pipe culvert at Norman’s, on the Outram to Hindon road, is in progress. Strath Taiori Riding.—The bridge that was broken on tho Cemetery road has been completed; also the cage over the Taieri River at Longford. A broken box-culvert on Ren wick’s road has been renewed. The gravelling of Brown’s road is finished; also the grading of the road from Middlemarch to Rock and Pillar, and Pugh’s road. Tho Moonlight and Mt. Stoker roads have been surfaced. The Taieri River protection works at Cottosbrook bridge are in progress. —Tho report was adopted. The Inspector recommended as follows: —Kaiorai Riding—That three trucks of metal be spread on Ferguson’s road. North Taieri Riding—That 200yds of gravel from Milner’s pit bo spread on Duke’s road.— Approved. The Sanitary Inspector reported favourably on the slaughter houses in the county and on the Green Island piggeries, and the boiling-down works at Kaikorai Valiev road. He had also to report that some of the residents along Gladstone road, North Taieri, were putting the drainage from their houses into tho water table, and > as the hot weather was now approaching there was a likelihood of a nuisance being created. —Ratepayers to bo notified to have nuisance abated. Tho remainder of tho repot adopted. The Ranger reported having impounded 10 head of cattle and four horses during the month.—Received. CORRESPONDENCE.

The Department of Internal Affairs offered copies of fire precautions for householders, and the best method to extinguish a fire in a dwelling. These could he distributed to schools,, and put up in public buildings, etc. One thousand would cost 17s Cd.—Resolved to purchase and distribute 1000 copies. The Chairman of the District Highways Council forwarded copy of the annual report of the Main Highways Board for year ended Ma :ch 31, 1926. —Received. The Minister of Public Works, in reply to an application for a grant to gravel Farm road, Gladbrook, notified that it was now too late, the Supplementary Estimates having been closed. —Received. The Town Clerk, Green Island, wrote regarding two lights on the boundary road near the Presbyterian Manse, and asked if the council would assist, also respecting footpath at Lookout Point. —Resolved to ascertain cost of lights, with a view to assisting. The clerk to write and ask what proportion of cost of footpath would be forthcoming from the Dunedin City Council and the Green. Island Council. The N.Z. Refrigerating Company wrote regarding drainage from the Otago Preserving Company’s works running into their paddock, and becoming -a nuisance when stock were in the paddock. Referred to member for riding and inspector, with power "to act. Mrs Johnston, Brighton road, wrote regarding culvert being too small to take the water, and her paddock was in conseq. ace flooded. —Referred to the inspector to report. . , Cecil Hazlett, North Taicn, in reply, declined to pay half cost of cleaning ditch on Duke’s road. —Representative of the council to wait on ratepayer adjoining Mr Hazlett’s before taking any further action. The Clerk. Taieri River Trust, wrote stating that some of the pipes from Spencer’s road drain were broken, and asked if the county would supply three 15-inch pipes in their place.—Pipes .to be supplied. . T The Secretary, Brighton Electric Lighting Committee, wrote advising that his committee had decided to obtain the opinion of Mr Callan on the \\aipon agreement regarding supply to Brighton residents, and asking if the council would alio the clerk, along with Cr M lutosh, to wait on Mr Cullan with a copy of the agreement for his perusal.—Agreed to. The Town Board, Outram, wrote, in reply, granting the corner of the reserve between cattle pens and railway as a site for a public pound.—The Town Board to be thanked for offer. John Richardson (Maungatua) ) asked for some attention to the road to his place, as a motor lorry could not get through on a wet day.—No funds available meantime. f C. Robinson (LamblnlD) asked for some attention to the back road on his rU n.—Work to be attended to. The District Engineer. New Zealand railways, advised that the ditch under railway. Centre road, Middlemarch. was clear, the trouble complained of being further down the ditch. —Received. James A. Roberts (Gladbrook) wrote regarding Station Creek bridge and the grading of road to his homestead.—Held over till next meeting. The sub-committee of the council appointed for the purpose reported on the conference with the Middlemarch residents regarding drainage of the township. A motion had been carried by the meeting that no steps be taken in the meantime. Report adopted. Conference with Bruce, Clutha, and Tuapeka Counties regarding by-laws and classification of roads. The Clerk reported that the various bodies had met and advanced matters a certain stage. Another

meeting would be held shortly, at which a draft copy would be submitted for discussion and consideration.

William Stewart (Kaikorai) wrote regarding opening of road to his section, block VI, Dunedin and East Taieri. This was considered at last meeting, and held over. —Applicant to be advised that the council had no right or title to land through sections 19, 20, and 21, block V, Kaikorai.—The clerk was also instructed to inform Mr Stewart that the ford on the top road had been attended to.

R. Kidd (“Glenavon,” Sutton) wrote regarding road line adjoining his property. If this wore not a public road, as had already been stated by the council, he asked would he be justified in fencing and closing the road. —Clerk to make inquiries. J. E. K. Lambourne, surveyor, Dunedin, asked the council’s consent to a subdivision of allotments 14 and 15, and parts of allotments 11, 12, and 13, block 1, township of Brighton.—Agreed to. A. Doherty mentioned the road to the new church at Hindou, and asked that the inspector report thereon.—Agreed to. BUj.jI.DING PERMITS.

Building permits were sought by Sneddon and Sons (Brighton), five-roomed house; Mrs W. Christie (Brighton), fourroomed house; Flyger and Co. (Brighton), petrol pump.—All were granted.
