LAWRENCE NOTES.

(From Oue Own Correspondent.) LAWRENCE, September 23. THE WEATHER. Since the last notes appeared the weather here has taken a wintry turn, snow squalls sweeping the district for two successive days. The hills as well as the low country received a heavy coating, and in some portions of the district heavy drifts were experienced. The weather has gradually cleared and conditions have been more settled. FARMING NOTES. The recent spell of wintry weather stopped all farming work that was in progress. Feed is not in the forward state that it should be for the time of the year, and in some cases winter stocks are still being relied, upon. Lambing is now general, and fortunately the mortality amongst the lambs during the cold spell was not so heavy as was expected. SALE OF.WORK. The ladies of the Methodist Church held their annual sale of work in the Town Hall yesterday. Mr Simpson (Mayor) opened the function and wished the ladies success in a deserving object. Good business was done during the day, and in the evening attractions and original competitions were carried out. The sum of £9O was raised for the chinch funds. FIRE BOARD. The quarterly meeting of the 1’ ire Board was held in the fire brigade station on Monday afternoon. _ , The Undcr-secrctary to the Department ox internal Affairs advised that the Minister had approved of the board’s estimate ot expenditure for the year ended June 30, 1926. Mr D. J. Calder wrote asking for leave of absence, as ho was going on an extender tour of Australia. —Leave was granted. It was resolved to grant the fire brigade £5 5s towards the prize fund for the Matt Cup competition. The Superintendent of the brigade reported that there had been two fires since last week. The fire station and plant were in good condition. The membership of the brigade was 13, all of whom were practising for the competitions to be held in October at Lawrence. , Accounts amounting to £5 15s were passed for payment. VICE-REGAL VISIT. At the last meeting of the Borough Council the private secretary to the Governor-General wrote advising that their Excellencies Sir Charles Fergussou and Lady Alice hergusson, would visit Lawrence on October «, arriving at 1.15 p.m. and departing at d p.m. It was mentioned at the meeting that the diamond jubilee of the constitution ol the borough would ba hold on October I', and it was decided to celebrate the function at the same time. The council resolved „o form a committee to make arrangements tor th! vice-regal visit and the jubilee function BOROUGH COUNCIL. The ordinary meeting.of the Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers on Monday night. Williams (Minister ot hub.ic Works), stating that the request of the Lawrence Borough Council for £SOO towards the maintenance of Ross place would bo looked in -j°ho Main Highways Hoard advised that the sum of £75 had been authorised in payment of works specified in the borough. The Chairman of the Works Committee reported on the various work accomplished during the fortnight. An extra surfaceman had been employed, and a definite scheme had been mapped out, so that all the street., in the borough would be attended to. The Water Committee was authorised to review the special water supply charges, several anomalies being pointed out, ana to report at the next meeting. The Cemetery Committee repotted <>« urgent work pending at the cemetery and it was instructed to have the work attended to when the weather was more settled The Clerk reported that the petition foi the inclusion of the district in the inner area of the Otago Power Board had bee completed, and had been forwarded to the Power Board. The response to the petition was very gratifying, and it was estimated that over 80 per cent, of the ratepayers had 81 Accounts amounting to £IOG were passed for payment. qInERAL. The spinters’ ball was held on Wednesday night of last week in the Town Hall, and notwithstanding the inclement weather was very successful, about 65 couples taking the floor. Ths hall was tastefully decorated, and visitors were present from all parts of the district. .. . The annual concert in connection with the Presbyterian Sunday School was held on Friday night. A return hockey match was played at Beaumont between the Lawrence Ladies Club and the Beaumont Club yesterday. T e Beaumont team proved the winners by * goals to nil after a strenuous game.
