ROSS FELLOWSHIP.

MR J. M. BATES. B.A. Mr ,1. M. Bates, 8.A., a divinity student at Knox College, has boon elected by the council of that institution to succeed Mr \V. .1 Boraman as Hoss Follow for 1927-23. Th c Ross Fellowship is of an annual value of £l5O, with free quarters at Knox College, the holder being under the obligation to carry out some approved research work in some subject which has engaged his attention os an undergraduate. Mr Bates, win is 24 years of age, received his early secondary education at the Thames and Te_ Kuiti District High Schools, later finishing off at the Auckland Crammer School. Ho commenced an arts course at the University of Otago in 1923, and since that time has distinguished himself in every branch of study he has taken up. In his freshman year he won both the James Clark and the M'Gregor prizes in philosophy, and in the following year gained the second section of his degree with distinction. In 1925 his work in Greek and Hebrew was again recognised. For the former subiect he was awarded the James Clark prize, also winning a special award for Hebrew. This year he was further honoured by being awarded the Senior Scholarship for Philosophy. Mr Bates, as Ross Follow, will undertake special research work in some branch of the psychology of religion, in which he will ho directed by Dr Dunlop (professor of philosophy at the University).
