RIO DE JANIERO, September 21— Arrived; Dom Pedro I, from Wellington. COLON, September 21.—Sailed: Athenic, for Southampton. The Sussex sailed yesterday afternoon for Bluff, where the remainder ’of her Eastern cargo will be discharged. She Is expected to leave Bluff to-night for Newcastle, Sydney, Java, and Calcutta. The Opawa, which is discharging Liverpool cargo at the Rattray street wharf. Is expected to sail this evening for Newcastle. ' Messrs Dalgety and Co: advise that tbe auxiliary schooner Plrl, from Auckland, has been bar-bound outside Westport for several days. The Plrl is to load explosives at Westport for Port Chalmers. The Progress is expected at Dunedin tomorrow from Wellington. She will load here and aFo at .Oamaru, Timaru, and Lyttelton for Wellington, New Plymouth, and Port Waikato. The Kahika has been fixed to load at Dunedin early next week for Wellington, Napier, and Gisborne. The Katoa is expected to leave Auckland this evening for Portland to complete loading for Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. The Kaiapoi is due here on Sunday from Wellington. She will load general cargo on Monday and sail on Monday evening for Timaru, Lyttelton, and Auckland. The Wainina was to leave Melbourne on Wednesday for Sydney, to complete discharge of her Pacific Coast cargo. The Hemuera was to leave Napier on Tuesday for Timaru, Lyttelton, and Wellington to complete loading for Home. She sails finally from Wellington on October 8 for Southampton and London, via Pitcairn Island, Panama, and Curacao. Built in 1910, the Stroma is a vessel of 3748 tons, and is owned by the Sutherland Steam Shipping Company (Ltd.). CUMBERLAND DUE TO-DAY. . The Federal Line steamer Cumberland is due at this port this afternoon from Liverpool via northern ports. The vessel will berth at Port Chalmers, where the local portion of her general cargo will be discharged. The Cumberland will sail about the middle of next week for Bluff to complete discharge. The New Zealand Shipping Company advises that the chartered steamer Colao was expected to leave Montreal yesterday with Canadian cargo for discharge at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. THE PORT HACKING, The Commonwealth and Dominion Line’s steamer Port Hacking is due at Auckland about October 1 with cargo from New lork. She will also discharge at Wellington, Lyttelton. and Dunedin and then load at South Island ports for England. A Spanish motor ship, the Conte de Churnica, was recently docked for repairs at Messrs Smith’s Dock Company (Ltd.), North Shields and South Bank-on-Tees, as it was known she had damaged her bottom, while returning from her trial trip after an extensive overhaul by her builders. LATEST IN OIL TANKERS. An , interesting event took place on the Clyde (Scotland) recently, when a new tank steamer, which was specially built the Australasian trade, was launched. This vessel represents the very latest practice in the construction of this class of vessel, and quite a notable gathering was present to witness the naming and launching ceremony. The ship, which was christened Plume, is of steel construction throughout, 460 ft in length, 62ft 6in wide, and 36ft 6in deep. The total deadweight is 12,300 tons, while the speed will be 11J knots. Oil will be burned under the boilers. There are nine main cargo tanks, each fitted with special bulkheads. One of the unique features of the vessel is its capacity for carrying an unusually large number of different grades c. oil. The total carrying capacity is 9800 English tons—or more than 3,000,000 gallons of oil. Special provision is made for the safety and comfort of the craw. Particular care has been given to the fire-fighting appliances installed, while the men’s quarters have been fittad up in accordance with the most modern practice. ' The vessel is one of the new types of tanker that is being constructed to the order of the Vacuum Oil Company, Pty. (Ltd.) to assist in bringing patroleum products in bulk to this country. A sieter ship is nearing completion. The builders are Lithgows [Ltd.), Port Glasgow. The Plume will be the largest as well as the most up-to-date tanker vj siting tnese waters. She is due in Australia on her maiden voyage in October.
