THE MEAT FREEZING INDUSTRY.

TO THE EDITOR Sir, —I notice in the report, in your issue of the 20th inst., of the monthly meeting of the Southland Farmers’ Union executive that Mr G. P. Johnston, delegate to the annual meeting of the New Zealand Meat Export Control Board, stated that .. motion “ for a committee to go into the question of a compulsory merger of the freezing companies was defeated by 10 votes to 8.” I would like to state that such a motion was never put before the meeting. The motion put before the meeting was—“ That this meeting of delegates, representing the sheep owners of this Dominion, is of the opinion that the Meat Producers’ Board should take immediate steps to endeavour to place the freezing industry on such a footing that the producers will eventually own and control the works with the object of conducting such works solely as freezing factories.” It would be interesting to know why statements of this kind are made, which are not only misleading, but contrary to fact. From the tone of Mr Johnston’s report, he is evidently quite satisfied with the present policy of the board, ’and also with the existing conditions of the freezing industry. It seems to me, from the information placed before the Meat Board’s annual meeting, that something must be dona to save the freezing industry for the farmers of New Zealand, and so to save the farmers themselves from financial disaster. — I am, etc., J. D. Kevie, Crookston.
