CHARGE OF ASSAULT.

BOY STEUOK WITH WHIP. (Pbb United Press association.) CHRISTCHURCH. July 18. Because a small boy of nine years threw stones at him, hitting him with one stone and one of the horses he was driving with another, George Wiggins, a carter, struck a boy with a whip. Wiggins appeared bo* fore Mr H. Y. Widdowson, S.M. and Mrs Herbert, in the Children’s Court on Saturday. the defendant admitted the offence, saying that he had struck the. boy in & temper and under provocation wnich he thought was severe. It was alleged that one stone marked the horse with a gash that the horse was a valuable animal, having cost ±,di, and that had the boy hit the other horse in the team it would probably have bolted. Wiggins spoke to the boy. who would say nothing, and it was then that he used his whip. , . The Magistrate said the driver s proper course was to have handed the boy over to the police. A fine of 40s with costs was imposed.
