FIRES.
OUTBREAK AT PALMERSTON. DWELLING HOUSE DESTROYED, About 2.30 a.m. on Friday morning, Mj A. M. Taylor, of Palmerston, was awakened by the effect of smoke, and found his house on fire He immediately placed his wife and children in safety, and aroused some neighbours. The ringing of the fire bell was heard by about half a-dozen people, who got the reel and hose out and connected it near the house. They succeeded in preventing the flames from spreading to the surrounding buildings, but the house was completely gutted, and all the furniture and effects were lost. The cause of the fire is unknown, and insurances are not as yet available. MOTOR VAN DAMAGED. “"PETROL BECOMES IGNITED. A motor-delivery van, belonging to Mr H. H. Croft, grocer, of Carroll street, caught fire last night at nine o’clock. The out while the tank of the van was being filled by the light of a kerosene lamp, and although the _ lamp was some distance from fhe car, it is supposed that a trickle of petrol ran from the tin to the lamp and started the blaze. Ihe fire brigade was summoned and quickly extinguished the flames. The damage to the van, which was insured for £IOO in the Insurance Office of Australia, is estimated at about £4O.
