Ministerial. The Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates) did not put in an appearance in the House of Representatives yesterday. He is confined to his room with a severe cold. The Hon. W. D. Stewart (Minister of Finance) acted in his stead during yesterday’s sitting. Mr T. 11. Cahill, who has been spending a few days in Dunedin, returned to Christchurch by yesterday’s express. Mr and Mrs C. P. Hninsworfh returned to Dunedin yesterday from Wauaka, where they have been spending a holiday, and arc staying at tins Grand Hotel. Mr S. F. .Spain, of Earnscleugh Station, Clyde, who has been laid up at the City Hotel for the past fortnight. Is much improved in health. A Hastings Press Association telegram states that Mr John W. E. Miles, chief clerk at the railway station, suffered a sudden seizure last on Thursday night, and died early yesterday morning. He was married with two young children. Our Christchurch correspondent reports that Mr A, J. Hastings has been appointed starter to the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club in succession to Mr W. Norman, who resigned recently. Mr Hastings was formerly Mr Norman's assistant, and he has officiated successfully for some time as starter to the Wellington Trotting Club. At a meeting of directors of the South Otago Freezing Company on Tuesday (lie resignation of Mr 11. Siinson as manager was received and accented, to take effect at the end of this mouth. Mr Simson has been manager for the company ever since its inception, nearly 14 years ago. Messrs Dalgety and Co. are in receipt of advice from their head office in London that Sir Thomas B. Fisher lias resigned from the board of directors owing to the slate of his health, after 63 years’ connection with the company. The Earl of Chichester has been appointed to fill tho vacancy. Dr Muriel Bell, who received the degree of Doctor of Medicine at the capping ceremony on Thursday afternoon, is the only woman to receive this degree in New Zealand since 1903. In that year Dr Margaret Gruickshank. who died in 1918. was the first woman to receive the degree. Dr Bell is. therefore, now the only women M.D. of tho University of New Zealand. A Napier Press Association telegram reports that Mr G. F. Roach, for 16 years a member of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board, during the last nine years of which ho has been chairman, having decided to retire, was yesterday made tho recipient of a presentation from members of the board and staff in recognition of his invaluable services to the cause of education in Hawke’s Bay. A resolution was passed placing on record appreciation of Mr Roach’s untiring efforts. Tho death at her residence “Caber Feidh.” Port Chalmers, of Mrs Isabella Howart MacKenzie removed a personality who was respected and admired by all with whom she had been associated. _ Her parents arrived at Port Chalmers in tho ship “Pladda” and made their home at West Taiori. where Mrs MacKenzie was born Afterwards tho family was engaged in farming pursuits at Otamita. On their marriage Mr and Mrs MacKenzie entered into business at Waiknia, where (hey resided for 15 years. On leaving Waikaia one of tho largest gatherings ever held in (his district took place. Handsome presents were bestowed and eulogistic speeches made. Removing to Port Chalmers they settled at “Caber Feidh.” where Mrs MacKcnzio became noted for her many kind and charitable actions, Tho interment took place hist Saturday, numerous relatives and friends from all parts of Otago being present. Mrs MacKenzie is survived by her husband and throe daughters, and one son, all of whom are marriled.
