■ ANTI-FOREIGN FEELING. OUTBREAK AT SHANGHAI. (Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright.) PEKING, May 30. On the anniversary of last, year’s riot a large crowd of Chinese gathered in the Nanking road, Shanghai, where trouble commenced. Agitators who were present worked the crowd up to a serious pitch of excitement. The mob began stopping the tramcars, ejecting the passengers, and smashing the windows. Reinforcements of police were called out, and using their batons they cleared the street. Two armed parties also arrived in a motor car with a quick firing gun manned by foreign police. They drove up and down the street, keeping the crowds back. The hre brigade was also present. The crowd threw bricks at the firemen, who turned the hoses on them. Foreigners in rickshaws were molested and coolies wefe beaten. Towards evening the crowds began to melt. The police have the situation well in hand. No firing occurred. One fireman and one cilivian, both foreigners, were seriously injured. Sr ral foreigners were assaulted at Amoy. Three men and one woman were sent to the hospital, but they are not seriouslv injured. According to Japanese reports a dispute between negro sailors of British nationality Chinese rickshaw coolies at Nanking led to one coolie being shot dead.— A. and N.Z. Cable.
