Ministerial. The Hon. 0. J. Hawken, Minister of Agriculture, arrived in Dunedin by the tirst express from the north yesterday afternoon, and was met by a party consisting of Messrs E. C. Hazlett, I'. Waite. M.P., G. Black, and R. B. Tennent (of the Agricultural Department at Dunedin). The Mayor (Mr H. L. Taploy, M.P.) officially welcomed the Minister. Mr Hawken was accompanied by his secretary (Mr L. O. Johnston), and is staying at the Grand Hotel. He will open the Winter Show at Logan Park this afternoon. Mr T. Jenkins went north by the through express yesterday. Mr D. H. Hastings left by the midday express yesterday on a visit to the North Island. Mr Walter Monk, representative for J. C. Williamson (lAd.), arrived from Christchurch last night to arrange for the season of the firm’s ‘‘Give and Take” company, which will open here next week, Mr J. H. Duncan, manager for Messrs H. L. Tapley and Co., left by yesterday’s second express for the north, lie expects to return to Dunedin towards the end of next week. Reference was made at yesterday's meeting of the Bruce Countv Council to the death of the mother of Cr H. M. Driver. Mr Jenks is accompanied by Mr David M’Millan, New Zealand manager for the institute. A Press Association cablegram from Sydney announces the death of Mr A. M’Mu*rough Kavanagh, at the age of 76. In his younger days he was head master of the Stoke School and later of one of the Auckland schools. Subsequently he became the owner and editor of the New Zealand Catholic Advocate. During his residence in Australia he was prominently connected with the Labour movement. A Wellington Press Association message states that Mr Henry Rose, accountant for the past three years in the Government Life Insurance Department, has been promoted to the position of secretary, and Mr H- S. Manning, formerly office examiner, succeeds Mr Rose. Miss Bessie Montgomery, who is leaving the town clerk’s office at Port Chalmers, to enter the employ of the Otago Power Board, was yesterday evening the recipient of good wishes from the Mayor and councillors, who presented her with a che.nue equivalent to two months’ salary. The members of the corporation staff made Miss Montgomery a present of an umbrella as a mark of their esteem. Mr H. O. M'Farlane, who has for many years been connected with the A.M.P. Sooietv in Napier and Auckland, has been annninted district manager for the Norwich Union I ife Insurance Poeietv for Otago and Southland, and has taken up his residence in Dunedin.
