HARRIERS.

The ■ Civil Service -Club decided its threemile handicap for the Railway Cup on Saturday. The race started in Victoria road ,at the back of. Forbury Park, the course leading towards, ,St. Clair, . then through the sandhills, turning to the left along, the track to St. Kilda and back via Victoria road to the starting point This course was covered ■ twice. Eighteen runners faced the starter, the scratch man giving away three minutes to the limit mi;n. With half the distance covered the leaders were Smolensk!, Wilson, Nelson and Waller, with E. C. Brown, Melville and Ewing following. Going down Lovers’ Lane Brown and Melvilje took the lead, and at St. Kilda .the. pair. led by 20 yards from Wilson, M'Kernan and Smolenski, with the bookmarkers coining strongly over the last half-mile. Melville cracked on the pace and won by, 15 yards from E. C., Brown, SO yards away, the scratch man., E L." Brown. Stevens and Harvey were fighting out third place, Harvey just getting there, followed by Stevens, E. L. Brpwn, M'Kernan, Wilson, Ewing, Smolenski and Bastings. Time; 17min 48sec 'The St. Kilda Club’s weeklv run was in form of a. paper chase. The trail led from the Anderson’s Bay School up the high road to Highcliff and then branched down the hill and came out at Tomahawk. Still keeping to the road, the trail finished near the school. The Edmond Cup team will be as follows:—J. Dunn, ,C Sidey, A. Foley,--W. . Foley. ,S. Gibbs, E. Keys. J. Chilcock, B. Esquilant, G. Pope and W. Steffans. with R, Mercer and L Buddicom as emergencies.' The Pacific Harriers Held their weekly run at Green Island. J. Burleigh and A E. Fish laid the trial ..and were responsible for a good run. There was a record attendance,. 33 members under Captains G. 'Williden and. W. Pimley participating. The paper led along tjie Brighton road for a .short distance, then across country to the edge of the swamp, which was followed as far as the bridge. From here the trail led back along the hills on the other. side of the swamp to Fairfield, then across the main road and up round the sand pits, then back on to the road, along which a fast pace was set in the run home. The members were afterwards entertained at tea by the committee. The Cargill Road Methodist Harrier and A.A. Club held its first sports meeting on Forbury Park. The following are the results;—loo Yards Handicap: First heat— D. Ashley (scr) 1; B. Harman (11yds) 2, A. Duncan (syds) 3. Second heat—A. M'Farlane (2yds) 1, J. Kerr (Iyd) 2, N Blackburn (2Jyds) 3. Third heat—.T. Prosser (2yds) 1, T. King (2yds) 2, B. Pearce (syds) 3. Final: D. Ashley 1, B. Harman 2, J. Kerr 3. In the 880 Yards Handicap B. Harman (100yds) made the pace till 40 yards from home, when the backmarkers came to the front, A. M'Farlane (50yds) 1. G. Strang (15yds) 2, R. Knowles (45vds) ‘3. Putting the Shot: B. Harman (27ft lin) 1, L. Grey (26ft) 2, .T. Prosser and N. Newbold (25ft 9in) 3. Broad Jump: A. M'Farlane (2ft) 1. G. Strang (3ft OIn) 2, T. King (2ft) and R. Knowles (2fr Din) equal 3. The club is indebted to Messrs Riddly and Graves,' who acted as Judges, and the Forbury Park Trotting Club for the use of the grounds. The Leith Harriers held a three-mile championship at Forbury Park. A good field faced the “starter, Mr J. O’Brien. The race was run on the inside track, but owing to' the heavy nature of the ground good times were not registered. Prom the start D. Fraser took the lead for nearly two laps, with J. Fraser and S. Parker close behind. J.. Fraser and S. Parker then alternately got in front, and the race resolved itself into • a -“hard -go” between them. Coming round into the straight J, Fraser and S. Parker were running neck and neck, with; S.. Peterson close behind. With 20 yards to go Fraser left Parker and won by five yards, with S. Peterson some distanae behind. Result;—J. Fraser 1, S. Parker 2. S. Peterson 3., The thanks of the club are due to the officials and, to the ■ Trotting Club for the use of the ground. . «<. The Caversham Harriers met at the Bt. Clair Baths and proceeded to the old championship course at the far side of toe Golf Links’ for a test run for the purpose of selecting the Edmond Cup team. Mr Maclareii started a pack of about .30 over a trail, approximately following the old course previously laid by Messrs Tapp and Bmmerson. The pack began to string out soon after the start, and It was then seen that C. Frye and Mills were out in front, closely followed by Hetherlngton. This order was maintained, until about threequarters of the way, when Emmerson went up ahead of Mills and Hetherlngton C. Frye keeping a good lead to the nmsn. The order of finishing was;—C. Frye, Bmmerson, Mills. Hetherlngton, Wood, D. Brown, White, Dove, and Williamson. J. Tapp did not go round a second time after laying the paper, on account of a sore foot. Another test will be held next Saturday, when It Is hoped to select two teams for the race the following week.
