The opening meeting of the Xorth-Knst \ alley United Band of Hope was held in the Institute. There was a large gathering of children, as well as a band of enthusiastic workers representing each of the churches. Mr T. Hilliker presided, and after the devotional- exercise, in a brief address of welcome, introduced Major Hulquist, the president for the year. Major Ilulquist pave a most instructive address on the evils of strong drink, and urged the children to sign the pledge. Seventeen children responded, making a total of 295 members. The following items were rendered during the evenine:—Solo, Louvain M'Donald ; recitations —Kileen Todd, Alice Wilson, Alwyn Rood. Roy ilson ; reading. Ronald Watt. The meeting was olosed with (he singing of a hymn and the Benediction. Smoking began ns a religious rife among the natives of America.
