SOUTHLAND COUNTY COUNCIL.

ANNUAL MEETING. (Fbom Our Own Correspondent.) INVERCARGILL. May 20. The Southland County Council held its annual meeting in Invercargill to-day, when Cr George Wraytt who represents the Oroti Hiding, was elected chairman for the ensuing 12 months in succession to Cr' Colin Robertson, of Waikaia, who has been a member of the county for the last SO years, and is now the only surviving member of the council in office at that time. A vote of condolence with the relatives of the late Mr I. W. Raymond, a former member of the council, was passed. Cr IS. Bowmar was reappointed to represent the county at the conference to be held in Wellington next month. The council decided to increase its con. (rlbuiion to the expenses of the Southland Court at the recent Exhibition by £650, makb'<r £IOOO altogether. Appreciative references to the work done by Mr Thomas Fraser on behalf of the Wallacetown Riding over a period of 15 years was made, and a suitable minute lecorded. The proposed erection of a bridge ■ the Mataura River to connect up Fortrosc with Invercargill via Gorge road, was discussed, but was allowed to stand over until th 3 next meeting in order to give tin representatives of the ridings concerned an opportunity of further considering which is the better of the two sites suggested by the settlers concerned to adopt.
