OIL TANK STEAMER
A TERRIFIC EXPLOSION.
TWENTY-THREE LIVES LOOT,
(Treaa Association—By Telegraph —Copyright.) VANCOUVER, April 11. (Received April 12, at 9 p.m.) A telegram from Port Arthur (Texas) states that a terrific explosion on board the oil tank steamer Gulf of Venezuela in the harbour on Sunday caused 23 deaths and injured more than a score of other persons. For a time other shipping, was threatened. Seven members of the ship s crew of 35 are missing, but it is believed that some are-among the dead. A number of dock workers are also missing.— Reuter.
CAUSE OF EXPLOSION
A LEAKAGE FROM TANKS
NEW YORK. April 11. (Received April 12, at 9.30 p.m.) Tne explosion, which was the result of a gasoline explosion, occurred during the early morning while most of the crew were asleep. The steamer, which carried 100,000 gallons of gasoline, was blown from the wharf in a sheet of flame. The ignition of leakage from the tanks caused the disaster. —Reuter.
