A NEW WOMAN.
EAGER FOR BOXING. Miss Annie Newton, who was recently, to taka part in a public boxing match w ith Miss Madge Baker, at London (the match was at the last moment stopped by order of the Home Secretary), is a virile speci men of the modern woman. She is slight, weighing about 9st. To a Daily Chronicle interviewer she said:
“Why should they spoil bit sport?” she asked. *T am no bruiser. Boxing keeps me fit and young. Have I got any thick ears?” she added, raising bobbed tresses for better inspection. “Of course, I havn’t. I box as a science and for points. You don’t need heavy punches in proper training, and any blows that would mark are taken by your guard, if you know how to box.
“There is a lot of boxing among women, but it is kept dark. I have been at it for years, and only ask the critics and the doctors to see my work. This business has made me more determined to go on with boxing, and I should like the Home Secretary to come and see me at it.
“There are other sports that women take part in that I don’t like, but I don’t make a song about it. Take wrestling and horse riding, for instance. Then there’s tug-of-war; that’s much more dangerous than boxing, for its strains the body.”
