ISLAND FRUIT TRADE.
GOVERNMENT STEAMER Tj BE BUILT. (Pet United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, April 12. The Government is calling tenders at Home for a steamer specially designed to carry fruit and to suit the needs of New Zealand’s Pacific dependencies. She is to be long, 30ft wide, draught 14ft, with 91)0 tons load, and speed I2£ knots. She will carry 10,000 to 12,000 cases of fruit. It has long been felt that some means of communication between these isolated islands and the Dominion must be provided. The Hinemoa is unsuitable and the schooner Countess cf Ranfurly is inadequate for the purpose. Samoa has supplied the central port which was wanting before, and also facilities for running an administration steamer.
