P. Riddle, who is now on a visit to Sydney, will probably bring a few horses back when he returns to the Dominion. Already he has purchased Deanwood, who won the Brisbane Thousand last August, and who has a record of 2min 20sec. The Potoa gelding Hipo was a strong fancy for his engagements at the Auckland meeting. He may make amends for defeat in his engagements at Trentham. C. Eastwood has made sufficient recovery from his smash up at the Marlborough meeting to resume riding work at Riccarton. , A yearling brother to The Cypher and Battlement has been sent to join the latter in F. D. Jones’s stable. F D. Jones will take Limerick, Battlement, and Zaragoza to the Wellington meeting. , Charlatan should be ready for the early winter meetings, as he is already busy in schooling lessons over fences. It has been decided to give Young Lochinvar a spell. He should make a useful three-year-old next season. Encouraged by the recent successes of Corinthic, her owner. Mr J. G. M Donald, has purchased her three-year-old halfbrother. by Sutala from Greenstreet. The youngster has been placed in R. Longley’s care to be initiated into the i icing business. , _ According to the records, _ Reremoana has started only 28 times during his four seasons on the turf. He has won racrs, been second and third each three times, and nine times unplaced. He was treated very carefully in his juvenile days, seing asked to race only three times as a two-year-old, and six times in the following season. He won his first race as a three-year-old. There is every reason to think (sajte an exchange) that Reremoana is only now at his best, being five years old, and it is to be hoped that the spring finds him at Randwick pitted against Australia’s best. The medical profession ought to have an occasional ticket on a ’chaser that got a place at Newnham (Tasmania) recently (states the Bulletin).. Brought up on a mixture of cows’ milk and hmewater .the steed was named Truby King. Roseneath, the winner of the Easter Stakes at Randwick on Easter Monday, w a two-year-old sister to The Thorn, who won the concluding event at EHershe on the same day. , , . . , Mr J. B. Nicoll has been appointed secretary of the Ashburton County Racing Club, and Ashburton Trotting Club, and will take up his duties on Mav 1. Sir George Clifford has disposed of Sightseer, a two-year-old brown by Autumnus from Telescope, to Mr Miller, a patron of C. Geisler’s stable at Wmgatui. What a good horse Rapine is was shown when he ran Income to a head in the Autumn Handicap, on© mile and a-half, at Ellerslie (says an Auckland writer). He was, carrying 9.15, and was conceding income 161 b. Income was always m a handy position, but four furlongs from home Rapine was well back. He came fast in the straight, and just failed to get there. Under the revised conditions of the English Derby, owners may strike out their en. tries by 'the last Tuesday in March with a forfeit of £25. There is a further forfeit stage of £SO eight days before the date of the race, after which the full liability of £IOO is incurred. These financial conditions are in force this year for the first time in the history of the race. Hitherto it has been possible to, run a colt in the Derbv for £SO. In instituting the change the Jockey Gkib hope in the first place that it wi(l increase the value of the stake, and secondly (says an English writer) that it will reduce the number of starters, it beiuff considered undesirable thafc th© Derby should have huge fields. For two seasons past there have been 27 runners for the race, and it will be interesting to observe how far the new conditions will curtail the number of competitors. In referring to the impending departure of the Earl of Stradbroke from Victoria, the Melbourne Herald remarks:— “During his term in Australia the Earl of .Stradbroke has given a practical demonstration of how to make racing pay. The Earl is not s betting man and by confining himself solely to the one horse he has won i1z.41 6 in stakes in a little more than 18 months. Training fees, entrance fees, and incidental expenses would involve him in an outlay of- something* between £SOO and £IOOO. so that his net profit would most likely be in the vicinity of £II.OOO. This, added to the sale price of 10.000 guineas for the horse The Night Patrol, makes venture an extremely profitable one. No other Governor has ever been so successful in msturf ventures. Lord Denham won a steeplechase with a hunter at Caulfield, but he, like Lord Hopetoun. derived more pleasure from hunting than from actual racing.

RACING IN AUSTRALIA. THE PROTEST AGAINST WINDBAG. (Press Association—By Tolcgranh—Copyright.) SYDNEY. April 12. Commenting on the protest against Windbag by Heroic’s connections in the Jockey Club Plate, the Sydney Daily Telegraph says: “The protest was inevitable, but the stewards did not occupy much time in deciding to dismiss it, there being little doubt that Windbag would have won had the jockey not changed his course; but the interference was so definite that little surprise would have been caused had the objection been upheld.” SYDNEY YEARLING SALES.
