GERMAN WHISKY FIRM LONDON, March 27 The authorities at Cologne have discovered a spirit firm’s ingeuiuos method of evading duty, says the correspondent cl The Times in that city. The firm impregnated the spirit with carbolic acid, and when it reached Hamburg it was shipped from there in casks to Antwerp as disinfectant, thus escaping duty The liquor was shipped to Mayence and taken by motor lorry to Cologne, where a disused paint factory had been converted into a secret distillery, to remove the carbolic. It is estimated that 63,500 gallons of the liquor was thus sold to Germany, undercutting the firm's competitors.
