SERIOUS CHARGE AGA.oST MOTORIST. (Pee United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, April 11. A serious accident occurred on Saturday afternoon at about 4 o clock at the intersection of Burleigh street and Khyber Pass, a middle-aged woman named Allington, of 24 Khyber Pass, being knocked down by a motor car a moment after she had alighted from an Onehunga traracar inward bound to the city. The- woman was immediately taken to hospital, and it was reported to-day that her condition was serious. The driver of the car was William James Ashdown, aged about 30 years, a resident of Mount Albert, who was subsequently arrested by the police on a charge of being in a state of intoxication while in charge of a motor car. CARTER AND HORSES DROWNED. (Pr," United Peess Association.) WELLINGTON. April 10. John Albert Clark, a carter, married, with seven children, residing at Petone, was drowned in the Hutt River this afternoon. He was engaged carting shingle from the river bed with a three-horse team, and while emerging from the river he made a mistake as to the point for crossing. Ihe man, cart, and horses were plunged mtc> a 15ft waterhole. The tide was in at the time which increased the depth of the water at the hole. Clark and three horses were drowned. NARROW ESCAPE FROM DEATH. (Pm; United Phess Association.) WELLINGTON, April To. A fatal accident was caused by the dangerous and foolish act of a young man residing at Petone. He attempted to fill the tank of a car with benzine with the aid of a naked hurricane lamp. In the subsequent explosion he had a narrow escape from death. The fire which ensued destroyed the shed, and five cars belonging to various residents. DROWNED IN THE AVON. (Pee Unite" Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, April 10. The fully-clothed body of a middle-aged man was found in the Avon near Brighton this morning. The man had been dead only a few hours. So far the body has not been identified. A SAD END. (Per United Press Association.) FEILDING, April 10. Millicent Mary Marshall, aged 48 years, wife of Edwin Marshall, farmer, Stanway. drowned herself in a well on the home property on Saturday afternoon. She had only returned home the previous day after 13 months in a mental hospital. She was missing only ft few minutes, when a search was made and the body was found in the well with a brick tied to the neck. The deceased leaves a grown-up family.
