When Carnot run into third place in the Templeton Handicap he did so in unknown colours. The CTarenceux gelding was sold by Mr G. U. Greenwood after running in tile Great Easter and on the second day carried the "chocolate-white sleeves and sash” of Mr J. Boyle, who hails from the North Otago district. Mr G. 0. Greenwood s horses now figure in the race cards as being trained by R. J. and P. V. Mason. The Sollerino geiding Rob was lame before being taken to Riccarton, and became worse as a result of his race in the Uicat Faster.

The crack Australian filly Vubcarc traces back to the North Otago-bred mare Cross Battery, who was taken to Australia bv Mr IL F. Nicoll. Cross Battery was the dam of artilleryman, and the dam of Vaiicare is out of a sister of the daughter of Stepmak and 1 irec-ross. Listening Post was unlucky to miss a win in the Great Autumn Handicap. b E- Jones made his run too soon, and in consequence bis -mount did not have enough in reserve to avert a very narrow defeat by Grand Knight and Royal Divorce who both had to be ridden right out under the whip to head off the Solfenno gelding: n few strides from the post. Gold Light was too big and soft in condition to reproduce her best form at Riccarton, but she will be in better racing trim at the Wellington Autumn meeting. Owing to the death of Mr G. B. Cambridge intended to send the English colt Rosenor and Los Ambus up tc the Wellington meeting and then on to the Manawatu meeting, but the failure of the former at Riccarton may cause a change of plan in the proposed campaign in the north. Set Sail was very unlucky in both her races at the C.J.C. meeting. In the Great Easter when running towards the talse rail she was lost several lengths by suffering interference from Licinius. This cost her a good chance of winning. In the Templeton Handicap Corn Money, who was running next to Volant on the rails, travelled wide at the turn and earned out Set Sail and others who were running on the outside of the Paper Money gelding. This presented Volant with a decided advantage. Set Sail had to make her run wide out. whilst Volant had a rail berth to himself. With a better run on either day the southerner would have gone close to a win. particularly in the lempleton Handicap, as she looked all the better tor her race on the first day of the ineeUii o - At Mentone on March 27 the tour-yea • old gelding Affirm won the Mentone Pui=e cun over a mile from 14 others. "Tom” Quinlivan also trained several other winners over a distance, and has proved himself a past master in the art of preparing a horse to get a journey. There is some little difficulty being experienced in selecting suitable ndeis (ot some of tho southern horses engaged at Trentham. There was some very good and some very bad riding seen at Riccarton this week. Some horses were beaten through bad luck and bad horsemanship rather than by lack of racing merit. Mr “Roddy” M’Kenzie. who won the New Zealand Cup and the Wanganui Cup with Sunart and whose colours rank amongst the most popular racing banners in the Dominion is on a bnel \isit to Dunedin. Baldowa will be sent on to Wellington, and should strip an improved horse at Trentham as he looked a bit on the big side when Diddled for his engagements at Riccarton. . The Wingatui trainer-owner D. r. V> ilson had a run of success at Beaumont, where ho saddled up four winners. He won a double wjth King Sol and d o scored with Buoyant and Black I^night. The atmospheric and track conditions were so much in favour of the watch at Addington on the final day of Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meetinn- that some owners were very diffident about starling their horses owing to beinc afraid of getting a mark against them which would be difficult or impossible to repeat under ordinary circumstances. The element of luck was in favour of Grand Knight when he landed big double at Riccarton. In the Great Easter Set Sail and Baldowa finished close up after suffering serious interference. In the Great Autumn Grand Kni-dit was a shade lucky to bent Listeninv Post. Still, tho imported horse put up a great performance, and when under hind pressure at the finish of both races finished on very courageously.
